iphoto 6 (and previous versions as well I think) also had a compare to original hot key (the control key) - in edit mode after making changes (but before you save out) you can see the net effect of your edits by pressing Control to see original pre-changes - release the key goes back to edits - doesn't work after saving

 

Also might want to know that if you command click on a gray spot in the edit mode you can auto set the white balance - e,g, if you have a gray card in your shot you can normalize tto it

 

(at least it used to work that way in iPhoto6 )

Hold down the shift key when you're editing a photo and the original shows (nabbed from the help file in iPhoto 08)
