File comparision

4 posts in this topic

I currently have two multi terrabyte drives and I need to compare the drives to make sure that all of the information that needed to be copied over has been copied.

So my question is, does anyone know of a software that can compare the files on the two drives and display the results back to me.

you can use the "diff" command in Terminal.

diff -rq /Volumes/Drive1 /Volumes/Drive2

to output the differences to a text file:

diff -rq /Volumes/Drive1 /Volumes/Drive2 > differences.txt

for more info, check out the man page

man diff

haha! yeah, "simple" is relative. To us nerds, hacking something together in the Terminal is usually more "simple" than using a GUI. If the GUI doesn't do exactly what you want, you might be stuck. But in Terminal, you can customize and pipe to your heart's content :)
