  1. Well, I'm sure I'm not the first, but I've just restored my iPhone to 2.1. Just a bit surprised that there's no buzz about it on the 'net. Then again, I am in the UK and it's a bit early in the US! Wake up and smell the update!

Apple Site has the following bullet points:-

    Update includes:

Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls

Significantly better battery life for most users

Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes

Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts

Faster installation of 3rd party applications

Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications

    Improved performance in text messaging

Faster loading and searching of contacts

Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display

Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages

Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts

    Genius playlist creation

  2. Sorry to hear you didn't get yours. Things were slightly better here in Cheltenham. I started queueing at 7:40am and was about 14th in line. The store opened at 9.00am and I finally walked out at around 10:30am (only 3 staff taking orders) , clutching my 'inactive' iPhone. The O2 computer system was down as soon as the doors were open, so paper application forms were filled in for every customer, and we were told that as soon as the computers were up, our details would be entered and our phones activated. This finally happened at around 3.00pm on Saturday.

Despite being 14th in line, I got one of the last 16Gb devices (none of which was white, but that was fine with me). People 4 behind me had to settle for the 8 giggers. I guess they get their rules on high, but it seems to me it would have been more helpful to check the store's stock levels in advance and let people in the queue know where the 16Gb cut off point was. It may have saved some people a wait for nothing (if I was really cynical, I might think it was a ploy to offload some 8 Gb devices who would settle for anything after waiting a couple of hours...)

Upon reflection, the whole thing was a bit like child birth - painful and slightly unpleasant at the time; but much better in retrospect, and pretty joyous once you've got your new baby home :-)

  3. I was sitting indoors yesterday, playing with Maps on my touch, and I pressed the locate me button. This has never worked before, but this time it drew a 100m circle right around my house!

If I lived in the States, this wouldn't be too surprising; but I live in a provincial town in the south west of the UK (Cheltenham). I haven't been able to find much information about Sky Hook coverage in Europe; but I'm surprised they've reached here already.

Does anyone else have experience of this feature working in the UK? Or has anyone seen a Sky Hook coverage map?

    Now, where was I? ;-)

  4. I have similar behaviour with my Shuffle, which I use exclusively for podcasts. It will only play podcasts if the shuffle switch is in the 'off' position. If 'shuffle' is switched 'on', it just flashes the yellow led at me. It took me a while (and a few factory restores) to figure out what was going on. Seems like strange behaviour to me, and not at all obvious or user friendly.

  5. I don't think there is much you can do - establishing the wifi connection is only the first link in the chain to wherever you want to get to. The rest of the chain is out of your hands - so if someone happens to have a switched on wifi router that's either not plugged in to DSL or some such, or is not configured properly, your request will go nowhere.

The only free wifi I've ever seen working (UK) is at MacDonalds (actually I was sitting in the car park next door - I don't like their food!)

  6. Sounds like a router setup problem. I don't have an Airport, so I can't help you there. Do you have any other wifi devices that connect successfully to the router? You should probably see you router's IP address in both the Router and DNS fields. Is the router set up to do DHCP correctly?

  7. I liked the 'old' dock look on my iPod Touch - it reflected (ha!) the style of the dock in Leopard, with the icons reflecting off of the shiny dock shelf. Now the dock is the same as the iPhone dock i.e. 'perforated steel' look. I can only think of a couple of reasons why they would change it:-

    1) Reflections were too hard to implement for web clip icons, other apps etc.

    2) There was such a negative reaction to the shiny dock in Leopard, that its days are numbered - on both the iPod and the desktop.

I love my new apps; but I miss my old shiny dock!

  8. I'm off to the States in mid-Feb, and would like to use the opportunity to get an Apple TV, but I'm not sure if it will work with a 240v 50Hz mains supply. The only detail I could find on the Apple web site stated, "Built-in 48-watt universal power supply". Sounds promising, but I would be happy if someone could confirm that for me.

  9. I got my (number 4) replacement back on Monday, and it seems fine in every respect. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it stays that way, as I really like it and use it a lot - mainly as a portable web browser around the house, rather than as an iPod. I still prefer my shuffle (for podcasts) and 5th Gen for music/games when I'm out and about.

  10. I'm just about to return my third iPod Touch. The first had the well documented screen problem. The second had an intermittently unresponsive touch screen, and the sleep/wake button stopped working altogether. The third one won't sync more than a few tracks without failing, and now a problem has developed with the audio output - where you only hear 'part' of the soundtrack. This last problem is a weird one - it's almost like you are only hearing a couple of tracks from a multitrack recording, for instance, you can hear drums and backing vocals, but the main vocals are not audible. On a spoken podcast, sound effects can be heard, but there is no speech. This only seems to affect the headphone output - the dock output sounds fine. I've tried different earphones, but that makes no difference.

I don't know if I've just been unlucky, or are many Touch owners seeing a lot of problems. The only saving grace is that the Apple returns service is second to none, and I get a replacement within three working days.

  11. Try the following:-

Have the image you want to use somewhere handy, like the desktop.

In iTunes select the video file and press cmd-I to bring up the info window, and select the Artwork tab.

Click on the existing artwork (a blue box appears around the image), and press the 'Delete' button.

Now drag the required image file into the image area, and press OK.

    That should do it.

  12. Has any iTouch user actually seen autobrightness working? I have my brightness level set to the mid-point and Autobrightness On; but moving between different ambient light levels seem to have no effect on the screen brightness. I've also tried covering up the light sensor (left hand quarter of the top bezel) but still can't see any change in screen brightness. I don't think it's a hardware fault as this is my second iTouch, and both did the same thing (i.e. nothing). Am I missing something?

  13. I pickup one up from Waitrose/John Lewis on Saturday morning. I had one on order from Apple and it was 8 days until shipping. I popped into Waitrose and they had five in stock, so I bought one - expecting to be able to cancel my Apple order when I got home. Only trouble is, when I got home, my Apple order was SHIPPING, so I now can't cancel the order. I guess I'll have to return it when it shows up.

BTW - I'm really impressed with the Touch! A thing of beauty. Everyone I've shown it to is really impresed - even the Apple cynics. It will last me until iPhone 2.0 turns up anyway.

  14. Thanks for the reply. I guess that's just Apple philosophy - it does a limited number of things really well. Most phones seem to do a load of things - most of them badly.

  15. I'm getting one; but I almost hate myself for not being more patient and waiting a while longer. I'm sure there will be a similarly priced 16gig version within a few months (MacWorld, maybe). I'm not too worried about 3G, as home, work, and local pub all have WiFi. GPS would be a nice addition to Google Maps though.

I'm just going to try and keep the phone in pristine condition and sell it on eBay when the time comes to trade up.

  16. With the fairly iminent release of Leopard, I wonder if we could have a show about the best ways to upgrade from an older version of the OS. Yes I have backups, but what are the steps I need to take ince I've got that shiny Leopard install disk in my hand?

  17. I doubt it will be launched tuesday. Just the launch date announced. Apple want people queuing to create a buzz in the media.

I don't know if this is relevant, but I just read on AppleInsider that the store is going to be staying open late on Tuesday - suggests to me they'll have something hot to sell; but I could be wrong - I've not been a Mac fan long enough to know how these sort of things usually go...

  18. I'm in the UK also - and I'd love to have an iPhone, and I may have trouble stopping myself buying one! So what I've decided to do is buy an iPod touch for now, and wait for the next gen iPhone to be released. Then I'll get the phone and probably sell the Touch. I guess I'm just a sucker for a nice interface!

I really want more than just 3G - I want GPS too, and a better camera. I'll wait and see what next year brings...
