Ok so my dad found an iphone and we want to return it to the owner. It ran out of battery before we could get any details off it, we charged it up but its come up with the passcode screen. Is there any way to get the data off the iPhone thats not through itunes? or maybe get the sim card out and put it in another phone and get numbers? thanks

    Found iPhone

ok now it says "iPhone is disabled, connect to iTunes" still can't get into it, should I try and restore it? If I do restore it will it need reactivating or something, I just need the ph number. and also i tried to put the sim in another phone and its different to my other one. Its kinda got a smaller chip size, like the whole thing is the same size but just the metal bit in the middle is smaller.

it doesnt show up in itunes, it just comes up with "iTunes could not connect the iPhone "name" because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPhone before it can be used with itunes"

    New Mac Mini

Long time no see everyone! so they just put out a new mac mini. but you know the thing is its stupid. because the old mac mini wasnt small enough, lets spend heaps of money and apple power to make a smaller one. its underpowered and overpriced. the whole point of the mac mini was to be cheap, the original one was $499. they should make another powermac cube with decent guts in it.
  5. ive turned the firewall off and i think i opened up the ports properly. my mac laptop and windows desktop. didnt work on my old dlink router and still doesn't work on my new Belkin N wireless router. It occasionally shows up and i can do the sharing (and home sharing) fine for a bit then it drops out. Most of the time it shows the network home sharing library in the sources bar, so i click on it. Comes up with nothing. then in a few seconds it will turn into a regular sharing library still with nothing then it will disappear. they both work fine with other computers of their kind (the mac works with other macs, pc with other pcs)

    Weather widget is completely inaccurate

Look outside!!? That is way to hard, I would have to go all the way over to my window and open it! nah but thanks for that looks much more accurate now
  7. hey everyone anyone else notice that the weather widget included with os x is inaccurate. it says sydney is like 30 sumthin degrees C when its in the middle of winter. is there some setting i have to change. i find this ironic because the source of the weather as it says on the back of the widget is Accuweather. is there any way to change the supplier or do i have to find another widget?
  8. I'm in Australia and can't decide whether to get an iPod touch or iPhone. I've seen a few iPhones around in the city but way more touches and classics of course. A few months ago I got a 4GB nano because my 20GB broke and I hate it I can fit nothing on it. Do many people feel that 8/16GB would be enough to store a few movies, podcasts and about 10 albums with room for documents and other back up stuff. I know i'll have to unlock the phone and do all the hacks on it and I know how to do that, but are there any notable disadvantages of the iPhone when out of the US. Is it easy to maintain ie updates and re hacking which is the main reason i'm a bit worried about getting an iPhone because Apple could put out an update and totally brick my phone. My normal phone is nearly dead and i'd like to get a new one soon even if i get a touch i will probably get some nokia phone. iPod touch - AU $374 for 8GB and AU $474 for 16GB iPhone - around AU $450 for 8GB

    Blue-black iPhones?

My friend at school just got a new black iphone and I was amazed to see that that black is actually blue, I'm pretty sure it wasn't the sun and out blue school uniforms like the guy said, but it was really not black, like really dark blue. Also did anyone remember that guy who got his leg burnt by the iphone when it melted, the pic showed it really blue. I don't have one, but could someone confirm this for me?
  11. I just got back from my holiday for a month and found my imac screen blank. I had unplugged the power completely for the month. It is still working like i can hear the fan and the popping sounds when i press the volume buttons from the speakers.
  12. I've just got a new pair of sennheiser in ear-buds and plugged them into my 20" Aluminium iMac. I'm getting this weird R2D2-like noise coming through the headphones, I can't hear it on normal Apple earbuds but I think it's because the in ear buds are really sensitive so you can hear everything like pick up noise on guitars as well as this iMac noise. Is there a way of disableing the headphone output when they're still plugged in, the noise is really annoying.

    WWDC Keynote

I guess that means in Australia the iPhone will be the same $199 and $299 with an expensive contract, then something like $499 and $599 on prepaid.

    WWDC Keynote

That would be the most obvious thing they would do but steve specifically said that the new iPhone will be max $199 internationally.

    WWDC Keynote

In Australia it's on Optus and Vodafone PREPAY!! I'm so glad they did this I can't possibly think of any way could have done it, it's way better than in the US. This is a great decision because all the kids including me wil go out and buy it. I hope they don't put the price up a lot for the prepay version.

    Movie rentals suck

This isn't about the movie rentals system, technically it works great but my point is that no one is going to rent movies. For me and a lot of people the point of having an iPod is to be able to carry all my movies and music with me and share it with other people. I have a huge collection of movies in my iTunes which I have obtained and I often share them with my friends by letting them watch my iPod and/or sending it to them. The point I'm trying to get to is that it is not pimp to say "yeah I rented that movie off iTunes but now I don't have it anymore because it expired in a day". It is much more pimp if you say "yeah I have that movie on my iPod, do you want to watch it?". The rentals seem to defeat the purpose of it. I think that Apple would be much well off and would earn loads more money if they killed iTunes movies and included XViD support and incorpertate BitTorrent into iTunes, but of course Apple will never do that beacuse they have their head up their arse.

    Found ipod

You don't have to use senuti to do it, you just plug it in and select manual updating then look through the songs. Theoretically Apple could track down the owner of the iPod but getting them to do so could be hard, when you get an iPod normally it asks you to register it and they probbaly have that information tied to the serial number of the iPod.

    Movie rentals suck

Apple makes next to nothing on the iTunes store itself, they use it to sell iPods. I think a reason why the iPod is so successful is that people can build up their collection of media and with rentals that doesn't happen.

    unlocking the Touch . . .

dude, crack it yourself. I would bet that Apple will have a very locked down and restricted app scheme for the iPhone/touch. You can't beat the apps that are already avaliable.
  21. I've got this external drive which is partitioned with NTFS for windows & HFS+ for OS X. I have backed up about 40GB to the HFS+ partition. I'm trying to read the Time Machine backups on Windows XP with MacDrive 7 installed. I can view the drive perfectly in explorer and in the properties box it says there is about 40GB used up, but the backups.backupdb directory is only 1MB.
  22. Ever since I got my iPod, I've wanted to get the nasty scratches off the chrome back. The most common way to do it i've heard is to buy some of the products which you use to polish it. I've tried it and its rubbish. I've had my iPof for 2 years in my pocket with keys and coins everyday and it was really really bad. If you want to use that you have to keep on rubbing it with tons of the solution for hours, and when you do get some of the scratches off it leaves the rub marks. The way i've done it is with a buffer and some normal metal polish stuff. It is now back to around a week after I had it, only the really bad ones are left on and are hardly visible. Plus it doesn't buff out the apple logo or any of the text at the bottom. So if anyone is thinking of buying any of the scratch products you shouldn't.

Steve says: "iPhone and iTouch SDK in February '08."

Am I the only one not surprised at this? They did the same thing that they did with bootcamp. They released the iPhone and intel iMacs, wait for people hack around the drm to run windows/iphone apps, then screw them more by releasing an sdk/bootcamp. I know apple has always had an sdk right there waiting, steve likes screwing people.
  24. I was wondering if it would be possible to unlock your iPhone by cancelling your at&t service, what would happen to your iPhone? Would it just act as an unlocked phone, or would you have to wait until the 2 years is up. If you can, why don't people just pay the fee to have it permanently unlocked so they don't have to worry about hacking and bricking?

    Freezing iMac

I think I have the freezing iMac problem that has been reported over the past few days (http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=10936). I find that its usually when i'm minimizing or maximizing windows with the genie effect, it locks up. It's really annoying because the only thing you can do is hold down the power button and restart. It only started yesterday when I did a software update and got all the updates prior to the release of the new iMacs. Is it possible to restore the original software with the cd that came with the iMac, it has 10.4.10 on it so it's not that old without completly restoring the whole system, just repairing it?
