  1. Thanks for the feedback. Not quite sure what you mean exactly by a "lame archive system," but yes, I decided moving excess files to another computer via a stopover at DropBox would ultimately be less painful than burning 10-15 DVD's. I'd use an external HD to avoid the net, but the last time I tried moving one between a Mac and a PC, the boot sector got corrupted and it cost me $200 in data retrieval costs. Guess 64 GB flash drives are getting down to where a mortal could use one for the same purpose, though. But DropBox was free. Good points. I have all the free space I need for now and am not going to to touch the caches. I'm just waiting for the next rev of the MB Pros to get a loaded 15" + an iDevice to be named later that will effectively replace the 3-4 computers I have now, all between 4-7 years old. Since I'll also plan run that into the ground, want the latest available to extend its useful and supported life a bit. Then I won't be worried if the old warrior freaks out when I try stuff like that on it. I pretty much already held the repair place blameless, but that makes me feel better. Also, the power connector was damaged in a fall a few years ago. Surprised it held on long as it did. But if I hadn't done that, I never would've gone into the guts for the drive alone at this stage.   2. I'm trying to free up space on my Tiger notebook's hard drive by deleting files and by transferring many of my saved podcasts to my desktop machine with plenty of storage left. When I delete docs and spreadsheets and pics, etc. Activity Monitor shows the increase in space right away, but when I remove LOTS of the podcasts, it shows no change in free hard disk space. Here are the methods I've tried: [NOTE: I keep all my media files in Music-->iTunes-->iTunes Music in iTunes 9.2.1 (5) - the latest for Tiger and I have the "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" AND the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" boxes checked. And the files in question were nearly all downloaded FROM iTunes. In other words, playing by the recommended rules and trying to avoid creating duplicate files in the first place.] First, for stuff I don't want to keep, I simply delete the files and then empty the Recycle Bin. This works for items not in my iTunes Library. Second, for stuff I do want to keep, I'm using DropBox as the transfer mechanism. I move the files to DropBox, and then once it shows up on my desktop, I move it from DropBox to a regular folder on the desktop hard drive. This also seemed to show a net increase in storage for my non-media files. I've tried about four variations: 1. Telling iTunes to delete the podcasts but keep the files and then moving the files to DropBox in the Finder (and in all cases removing them from DropBox to a new location on the desktop computer once they've been fully uploaded). 2. COPYING the files to DropBox and then telling iTunes to delete the podcasts and trash the files, and then emptying the Bin. (and later removing the files from DropBox on the PC). 3. Telling iTunes to trash the library and the files, and then moving the files to DropBox FROM the Recycle Bin (and again later from DropBox) 4. Finally, I tried moving the files to DropBox WITHOUT telling iTunes first. Then when I went back to iTunes (while the files were still uploading from DropBox) a REALLY odd thing occurred. I expected that clicking on the deleted files still on the playlist would yield an exclamation point and a greyed out entry as it does on iTunes in Windows. HOWEVER, the file still played, making me wonder if iTunes a> followed its being moved to DropBox - or - b> keeps another copy somewhere I can't see (this same concern has always kept me from using iPhoto as an organizing tool - thinking there might hidden copies I can't see in the Finder.] So I've just done another experiment. a> I used Finder to delete a podcast to the Trash. iTunes still played it. b> I next moved the file from the trash to DropBox. The file picked up just where it was in iTunes. c> Then, after it uploaded to DropBox and down onto the Desktop I moved it out of Drop Box onto the desktop computer (which is NOT networked to the notebook), so I can't see it in Finder at all nor find it with Spotlight. d> and for good measure, I went to DropBox and removed all deleted files there. And iTunes still plays it right from where I left off, AND I've picked up no free Hard Drive space. Finally, I clicked on the podcast in iTunes and clicked Delete. iTunes did NOT ask me if I also wanted to move the file to the trash. And I still got no more free space. I'm out of ideas. What gives? Where is iTunes playing it from? I don't get it! [Note: I also don't get Spotlight and the search box in Finder windows. I can search for a few files in the podcast folder and they come up by the words in the title or the artist, but most don't. But then I've never found the Tiger version of Spotlight to be worth much or very understandable, and it's the only version I know.]
  3. Thanks for your reply. I was still a little (or a lot) confused and I do consider myself a long time power user, but as you'll see, you may have put me on the path to solving the problem, and I'm pretty sure I now understand it. I've removed 7 to 9 gigs of video podcasts over three days without gaining much of anything. (10 GB free on an 80 GB HD) But before I began to archive files by moving them to the desktop PC via DropBox in any/all of the ways described above(and always removing them from DropBox once they arrived there, AND permanently deleting them from DropBox on the web interface), that is, when I simply delete and recycle, I see the increase in disk space immediately upon emptying the Recycle Bin. In fact I JUST tried regular deletion/empty the trash with some other podcasts and again, the reclaimed space STILL showed up right away. What freaks me out was that a podcast continues to be playable after the file was totally deleted and no longer on the computer! At least until I deleted the iTunes Library entry. That's what made me wonder if there's this big hidden file - kind of like the old Outlook or Entourage - that holds EVERYTHING even after the source file is gone. [uPDATE: Still curious about that, but see below] Cool. That was interesting. It definitely sees the file in DropBox. So this time I pulled the file out of DropBox onto the Desktop computer WHILE it was playing on the notebook, so there's no file on there anymore and it CONTINUED to play. In fact I can stop it, go to another iTunes piece, play that and come BACK to the deleted file and it STILL plays. Sooo... ...What's being played and where is it?? Update: Ah hah, I think... ...I just went back to the deleted file in iTunes and right-clicked to get to "Show in Finder" and there IS a path: Computer-->Macintosh HD-->Users-->Jim (me)-->.dropbox-->Cache-->2010-12-12-->filename.mp4. The ".dropbox" folder is greyed out, indicating it's hidden I guess, and there's been a long alphanumeric code added to the end of each file name. Also there are 113 other large files (4GB), and in moving up the tree, there are folders for other dates containing most, if not all of the files I've moved via DropBox all week (docs, pics and media), all with alphanumeric codes added to the filenames. Probably about 6-8 more GB in total. So thanks for the tip (altho' it took awhile to think of using it to look for a deleted/recycled file) and which makes my next question, is it safe to delete these files from these cache folders via the regular finder/delete process? I would imagine doing so will free up all the space I thot I was freeing up. I don't want to interfere with the regular/proper functioning of DropBox tho'. Maybe they'll be dropped after a specific period of time on their own? I ran Preferences, Disk Utility and Help looking for how to deal with (free up) cache/swap space and found no tools. But as noted, have now found this hidden DropBox cache. Still, aside from the DropBox cache, the notion of other cache folders is of interest in general, tho' no longer specifically part of my original question. This is not about my question, but here's the story: My '04 iBook still works well, like new even, but there's no point in spending money on it. When the power supply pin broke off inside of my iBook, I had them add a bigger, faster drive at the same time they put on a new power bus - but something went wrong during the repair and now the little old guy re-starts itself from the power off condition - even with the lid closed, backup.app won't write to an external device and the 6 key no longer works (I have to invoke the character viewer to type a 6), so they took the bigger drive out and gave me back the money. The battery's also done for, and the resale value - even if it was in good shape - is less than the price of a new battery OR a new mother board. So it's now strictly an in-house plugged-in (and constantly on because it loses its clock value if I unplug it). But I have uses for it, and plan to keep it running until something worse happens!
  4. I discovered this by accident..... I have a Canon Pixma 5200R which I used wired to my PC and wirelessly through my iBook. For whatever reasons I can't access the ink level info from the Mac -- even (I think, I forget) when I plug directly into the printer, but that's not my point here. But when a cartridge "shows" as empty, I am prompted by the Mac to replace the "empty." One day by accident, though, I discovered the following: I decided to see what other inks I might need to go buy, so I fired up the printer on my Win Machine and queried the ink levels. None showed as empty, though the one the Mac reported as out did show as very low. So I printed a small amount of text from the Win, and went back to the iBook and was able to print at least 50-100 more pages without further messages. Another cartridge "ran out" today according to the Mac and the same procedure has me printing again. If anyone has an explanation, it'd be interesting.... ...but if you have the same configuration, it's a way to save money..... ****** A few more reflections on at least Canon printer drivers for the two computing universes: I print web selections from the PC, because the Mac only allows me to print complete pages. Whassup with that? On the other hand, the Mac version of the driver remembers my settings from job to job, whereas on the PC, when printing webstuff, but not in WordPerfect, I have to configure the driver to draft mode and duplex on every job. So again, why the disparity?? In general, though, I find the Mac driver from Canon at least to be a second class citizen as printing program -- more cumbersome, missing options, incomplete communication. Or is this something about OS X v Windows rather than any fault of Canon's programmers??

    Ahhh, but the rub here is that unlike my old Epsons where I could regard it as a "warning" (and Epson started "warning" way, way before the cartridges were empty), you CAN'T ignore a Pixma message. That is, on the three I've owned, you can't print at all until you resolve the message.

    Wireless Printers

    The Canon 5200 R runs all my wireless and wired print jobs (Mac and Win) very well and I'm highly satisfied with it -- with a few caveats I just posted on the topic of "saving money on Canon Pixma printing ink" -- which you might want to check. It's been a reliable workhorse for well over a year -- and sometimes I do lots of printing and at others am away from it for months -- which has been death to my previous inkjets. PS: I have the printer plugged directly into the PC, not the router's USB port. The Mac accesses it through its own radio. I also have both the wired and wireless configurations set up on my iBook so I can use it plugged or unplugged. It's also lost contact with the Mac a few times, but a procedure in the manual (pointed out by the Canon Mac support guy) solves it easily.
  7. Reviews and Apple's own help site indicate you can "revert to the tabs that were open when you last closed or quit Safari." But this isn't working for me and I can't find any setting related to it in the preferences or Help.

    Outstanding. Simple as pie. Restores several multiple tab windows at once without extra prompting when closing Safari. Leaves any pages already running alone when invoked.... (I spent all my time in Preferences where the setting is in Firefox looking for this and when I didn't find it, or in help, assumed it wasn't (prominently) there. D'ohhhh. So thanks!

    Saving sessions in Safari 3

    Thanks! I'll look into this, but I would like to know the "stock method" if anyone does. I've never tried any Safari plug-ins for some reason, though I've looked at some. It might just be me, but Firefox extensions seem to be easily understandable, specialized to do one thing well, and "just work" while the Safari variety seem much more techy/geeky/utility program type/do-20-things-I've-never-even-heard-of to get one new function I want. A former Windows wonk, I just want to use computers effectively for productivity and communication, not tinker endlessly any more. Which is why I switched to Macs. Lack of session saving, the Cool Iris Previews, Customize Google, Googlepedia and a few other extensions in Safari still lean me toward FF, though I want to give it a chance. Lack of full GMail support's been the killer, though, even years after Google joined Apple's board. So even if I can save sessions and more extensions appear I'm still primarily Mozilla, memory hog that it is until GMail does everything it does in FireFox. But I had hopes for Safari 3 nonetheless..... So when I fired up 3.0.4 I was pleased to see more of what I see in FF on GMail. Then I went to compose an email, started typing a name, and my correspondents no longer pop up, making the program virtually useless now!! All my groups are ad hoc, so to use GMail on Safari I'd have to memorize hundreds of email addresses or clumsily compose from Contacts. Such a basic lack of compatibility with one of Apple's partners, the third-leading web net mail program (and rising), and the key internet biz in the world after years of time to get synced seems fairly inexcusable at this point.

  11. There are a number of sites I surf requring RealPlayer to see the content. Firefox has a 10.5 RealPlayer plug in from what I can tell. My experience on my PC is that Real Player insinuated itself into parts of my system I didn't want it to --- generated tons of spam, kept popping parts of itself I wanted no part of, continued to try to make itself the default media player. etc. Other than that it was a decent...... Should I accept missing some of my favorite sites, or is the plug-in OK to install..... ??? :?:

  13. :evil: It's like Emily Latella says, "if it's not one thing, it's another." I have one iBook I take with me when "commuting" between my residences in NY and out West where each home has a PC tower and wireless router. I was never able to get the iBook to print through the NY PC into my Pixma i4000 and eventually just started to plug into the printer I want to print to. But I WAS able to network the two computers and share files in both directions. I'm now out west with setup #2 and my new Canon Pixma i5200r has given me wireless printing from my iBook while the PC's plugged into its USB port -- so both computers print to the Pixma independently and only either computer has to be turned on. Yaaay!!! I'll implement the same solution when I get back to NY. But this brings me to my CURRENT problem..... (in my continuing switcher/multi-OS saga): As noted, I mastered sharing files between my ibook and my NY PC -- however, I haven't been able at all to do the same thing with the same iBook with my PC out West. My iBook just can't see my PC files (with all sharing enabled on both machines) -- it sees the Network and the workgroup NAMES but doesn't mount or see any shared folders. And from the PC side, Explorer takes about 3 minutes when I click on the Network name or on workgroup and then just either gives up or crashes the Explorer window. I've been through everything I did back in NY (I think) numerous times, but nada. Any suggestions??

    Still can't network Mac to on main PC

    The PC that DOES connect to the iBook (10.4.3) is a custom box (from ABS) running XP Pro with all latest updates -- It's also running the free Kerio Firewall and free AVG A/V software. The PC that WON'T connect is an HP running XP Home with all latest updates. It's also running the Symantec suite of Firewall and Norton A/V protection. I thought this might be part of the problem, but the firewall so dislikes being disabled it puts up a message about how unhappy it is every 10 seconds or so and I haven't figured out how to really turn it "off off." (I did find out my relatives had enabled both the Win and Symantec firewalls and turned off the Win firewall, but no help.) Maybe I need to try keeping Symantec from starting up in MSCONFIG (with the broadband disconnected)?? Still, it's never popped up a message telling me a device is trying to get through the firewall either...... What I also don't understand is how the iBook can see the network name on the PC (and I know it's the right network because I renamed it and the new name shows up) but can't see any of the files for which sharing has been enabled (and I know they're shared, because the sharing hand icon appears on those folders). Just to reiterate, WinExplorer sees nothing or just stops when I click on the (renamed) MSHOME or Workgroup icons on the Network section. There was also a stage in networking the two computers in NY where I was asked to sign into the mac with my mac password and on the mac where I recall having to give an address of some sort with some double forward slashes, but neither of these screens have ever come up on either computer in my attempts to network out west. I also tried connecting the Mac directly to the router by ethernet to no avail.

    Ok, I may be wrong with this as i don't have Office on any of my macs but i may be be able to help you out. When the dialog pops down, next to the filename box, there should be an arrow pointing downwards, click that and it will expand and show a finder like windows where you can browse to whatever folder you like and save it there. I hope that is what you mean, and if it is I hope it works for ya Well my stars and garters!! That's not what I would have expected a button next to the filename to expose -- I would have clicked on it long ago if it were next to the folder name (documents) -- like the button next to Manage Bookmarks in Firefox. And yes you can tell me -- and I'll acknowledge -- I should have clicked every button in the dialog box before deciding what it does and doesn't do -- but it was just an unlabeled thing that never caught my eye -- and if it gets past a power user, it'll get past others. So a problem semi-solved. But also worth noting that what gets exposed is still not a real Finder Window and Ctrl-Clicking, folder renaming, etc are all still unavailable. Why not just give us a real Finder Window?? Creaky old Windows lets ISV's expose all the Explorer functions in their save dialogs...... And as for intuitive design points?? Still a minus 10 on this feature IMHO. Thanks a ton though.
  16. Much of what I've found has been brilliant and certainly fun, engaging, and more. But while I could spend pages of praise for many of those, and am in the Apple world to stay, I need to get serious production work done and need certain things to just work -- and some of them aren't despite my best attempts. So here's some of my Q's, boo-boos and general complaints..... ...in the hopes that someone will come along with a magic wand and tell me they're solved...... 1. I know Apple finally relented on thinkilng people were too stupid to use a two button mouse and gave us Mighty M, but is there any chance they'll ever realiize that people can handle BOTH a Delete and Backspace key? This gets my goat everytime I go to edit ANY document. And is just dumb, dumb, dumb after all these years. (Or do both keys work -- as they do in Windows -- on full sized, non-Apple keyboards?) 2. Another vexation is missing keyboard ways that work the same in all apps for going to the top and bottom of a document (or a line) you're working on?? The keys even work differently (and not completely) within different parts of some apps (Office 2004 for sure -- but it's not always the same in all of Apple's own dialog boxes either as I recall). 3. File sharing between MyDocs and Documents is finally working well (it wasn't THAT simple for me as a 20 year computing vet). However.... 4. ...Have tried many times to access shared printer on my Win Machine to no avail. The printer blinks and the Mac thinks the doc has printed, but no printing happens. This is my biggest concern to date -- and answers that require loading two or three other programs seem to belie Apple's promise I'd be able to do this. Any suggestions?? 5. PARTS of Firefox freeze after awhile. That is, the left most tabs just quit working, but the right-most are still active, and I can reload a new window with a new set of working tabs, but THEY freeze after awhile. Still I know the Fox and (to my knowledge) you still can't save SETS of tabs in Safari, and in my unclocked tests, FF certainly seems to me to load pages faster (and has all those wonderful extensions and plug-ins). 6. MAIL woes: Entourage and Apple Mail are both a mess for my purposes. Apple Mail won't do Hotmail, and I have many existing business accounts linked to HM. And Apple Mail is SUPPOSED to do GMail OK. But after many combos of settings and trips to the GMail support forums, no way, Jose. Well, part way. I can finally receive, but not send. Well, I CAN send if I use my ISP's outgoing server, but that's an ugly kludge and doesn't work when I'm not on my home network. Entourage is even more of a mess. I can neither send nor receive GMail, and it now insists on sucking my HotMail off the server, placing it in my Main inBox (which the Ent. Help system says it WILL not do) so that I can't access it on my Win machine -- even from the HM webpage, let alone in Outlook Express..... ....So I removed and and then readded the HM account and it CONTINUED to do the same thing, with one change: Entourage now freezes after about 10 minutes. Not a happy mail camper (but like the nifty customized google.com/ig home page I set up as a stopgap, BTW). Some cached material on MacFixit.com helped me stop the freezing, but not solve any of the rest.... 7. More along the lines of MS products on the Mac, I must say that Word for Mac still sucks, but at least sucks less than Word for PC!! Except it won't open any of my 20,000 WordPerfect files and PC Word will. So I will continue to do my serious word processing on my PC in WP (still the world's best W.Processor by a country mile) (and be forced to save copies in .doc format). 8. FEATURES that are BUGS: I also solved the problem of horizontal trackpad scrolling sending my Firefox pages into a tizzy of going back and forth between pages I'd visited (and losing many email drafts and half filled in forms) with two changes in about:config, but these should have been the default -- not having the slightest bit of horizontal scrolling doing what you don't expect or want.... ...but we'll put that one on Mozilla's, not Apple's plate, and now I've been able to re-enable H. Scrolling, and really don't feel the need for a mouse anymore with my iBook. 9. And I find some things stiill strangely primitive: the inconsistent (and almost never as good as Windows) behavior of CMD-Home, CMD-END, etc. It seems so obvious as mentioned above that people need quick ways to get to the top and bottom of draft docs or docs they're reading..... 10. The Stickies app just doesn't work: whenever I click on Services it's always greyed out. 11. Also I just find Win to be more configurable -- tho' I have 20 years of experience and know much more about it -- but I fear I'll have to master a Unix interface to ever gain the same degree of control I have from within Windows now. 12. And again, the very inconsistent behavior of alternate choices in dialog boxes, i.e., in some you can tab between choices, in others you can't. In some, pressing the first letter makes the alternate choice and in others it doesn't. I thought we were dealing with the world's most advanced OS here..... So there's a dirty dozen for you all.... And would MUCH MUCH appreciate some feedback on some of these things!! But I WILL stay with Mac for sure. Particularly once Macintels SHOULD be able to run Virtual PC at native speed (if MS allows it) and one would (WILL?) then be able to have all the benefits (and quirks) of both machines in a single box!!

    I hadn't checked this thread in awhile and just wanted to thank everyone who's made some great suggestions. I'm much more Mac seasoned now and more committed to staying with the platform than ever. However, after 5 months in the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field, I'm still running into some of what I consider RDDD's on Apple's part (Really Dumb Design Decisions) that unnecessarily complicate my computing experiences. Thus I''ve decided to write a freelance article on this topic -- about what Apple needs to address to really make switching more painless -- As for why these mostly not very complicated and probably not very hard to fix things haven't been implemented -- if only as options for switchers -- I've decided that the folks in Cupertino think they've ACTUALLY done the making switching painless deed -- but most are such dyed in the wool Mac users that some things (many from pre-OS X days and some waaay back in Mac history) they find intuitive and natural are only that way to them because they've been doing them so long. So my "cause" is getting Apple (and some ISV's and hardware suppliers, e.g., printer manufacturers and the driver software they supply) to pay some attention to polishing their interfaces so that OS X will truly be best of breed in the desktop computing world -- and be much more inviting to those coming from other computing lands. I will certainly incorporate the suggestions you've made (when tested) about workarounds and third party fixes -- but these SHOULDN'T be necessary since many of them serve no useful purpose for current Mac users. And where the solutions already exist in OS X, I would like to see them made more discoverable by switchers and newbies. Case in point where both Apple and ISV's are at fault: In Word, you can drill down to save files in subfolders WITHIN the Documents folder. But even within the Office Suite, MS doesn't offer this option in Excel or Entourage!! And Apple doesn't offer it in TextEdit! What's the harm or "complexification" to any Mac user, newbie or otherwise, in making this functionality available to those who want it?? You could always stop at dumping everything Documents, trusting in Spotlight and users don't HAVE to go further after all. But even within the file dialog in Word, there are more vexations: it LOOKS like a Finder Window. But it's not. You can't rename a folder or a file there -- but instead have to make a trip to Finder to open a new window! That's not ease of use. And Ctrl-Clicking is not even enabled in this faux finder window. If there's a point to this programming I certainly don't get it. And I'm compiling a whole compendium of issues like this..... Anyway, I think the article's worth writing. I just haven't figured out the best places to submit it -- and how to get it to Apple's attention. Any suggestions (both re your own switching issues and solutions and how to get the word to someone at One Infinite Loop who's in a position to have action taken) would be appreciated.

    IPaiz sent me a message that was to the point: "400 sandpaper: NOOOOOOOO!" So....Finally got around to looking for this. My big local Home Deport has nada finer than 220!! So will try Auto Zone, etc..... But if you're still following this thread, iPaiz (or anyone else with personal experience with this sanding technique), what did you think of the advice to wet the sandpaper before using it and to moisten the area you're going to apply it to?? :?: PS: Think I'll opt for one of the plastic polishes mentioned (Filtz and others) in this thread rather than the polishing compound the latter are engineered for clear plastic surfaces and the latter for auto paint (and so may be slightly different).
  19. I have PC XP Desktop computers plugged into wireless routers at two locations, and I take my iBook between the two. I have a Canon Pixma ip4000 at the first location and have learned (after much effort and correspondence with Canon) that despite the hype, the only way I can really print from the iBook to the printer is to unplug the printer from the PC and directly plug the iBook into the USB interface. So I was about to order a ip5200 for location #2 and ready to do the same cable switching routine when I discovered the newer ip5200r which includes a 802.11 b/g interface for an additional $50. I wrote to Canon and they indicated that I'd be able to seamlessly print via the Wi-Fi connection from both my PC and iBook without doing the unplug/replug samba. Does anyone have any experience with printing via Wi-Fi?? And in particular: Will this solve the problem of having full access to the printer from both computers? Will there be speed compromises in the printing speed by using Wi-Fi as opposed to the USB 2.0 connection??     Thanks IPaiz. You sound so authoritative I think you may actually get me to go for the true grit, i.e. the sand paper. But I'll still try it out on a non-critical area before directly going for the screen..... :-$ (Wouldn't be prudent not to!) ....and I think people should understand that the finest sand paper in your local hardware store may be 400 -- not the 1200 or 1500 you mention -- which I've never actually seen and have no idea where to buy. But folks, if you go this route, 400 takes paint off cars in a second and is probably NOT amenable to Ipaiz' method!! [-X As for ongoing protection, anyone have any thoughts on this "thin film" I keep hearing discussed in various podcasts?? What is it? Where does one get it?? :?: And there are as mentioned at least a few brands of polishes designed directly for plastics and eyeglass lenses. Anyone have some suggestions on those?? :?: "Questions. We got lots and lots of questions." But that's what forums are for......

    Having also been a jeweler and a general tinkerer, I sense Ipaiz is correct from my experiences with gold and silver and jeweler's rouge :-k , but damn, I'd be pretty reticent about taking sand paper to my 400 buck iPod, knowing that one predicted stage is satin opacity!!! :shock: :shock: :shock: Somehow I've picked up one deep scratch in my new 4G 60 GB screen just when I was going to put it on eBay in order to pick up a 5G so I'll have a CD quality podcast recording studio in my pocket wherever I am (and for turning unsuspecting bystanders onto Tikibar TV) -- and now I have a solution. It just terrifies me. So I might instead put in the hour of slower, finer polishing the other correspondent mentioned. I would certainly try it out on some junk plastic and then on a less visible part of my 'pod before attacking the screen in any case. And I sense there's some skill and technique involved that not everyone might have. Do you agree?? But if you're still on this, IPaiz, what about skipping the sanding and just doing the polishing compound for a longer time?? And what are your feelings about the Brasso solution I believe Adam discussed in his show?? In any case I give you points for being hard core on this!! :!: =D> :!:

  23. OK, this question is a little detailed and complex, but if anyone has any considered thoughts, I'd sure appreciate them. (And I apologize for posting it on both the iPod and Hardward stuff forums, but it spans both) :oops: So....I grabbed the Student Union deal to break into the MacWorld with an iBook and 60 GB iPod (large music/photo collection). But also intend to start a regular podcast (and/or a vidcast), and had become resigned to needing to buy a second device (Sony Minidisc or Eridol SR1) to record CD-quality audio on the go. NOW Apple's released the 5G model which is basically (once the software and mic input options become clearer) a podcast recording studio without needing a second device with me. And I'd still rather only deal with one device. So.... ...considering putting the old (new) iPod up on eBay and then buying the new with the diff. But then I have this OTHER issue. I'm buying a new external hard drive to back up my 200 GB's of data files on my Windows PC, and that drive cannot be partitioned so that I can ALSO use it to back up my Mac. In other words you can't have an HFS section on a drive for the Mac and an NTFS section for the PC. I thought of mirroring my Mac data files into a folder, since there's far fewer of them, but, THAT would require formatting the drive as FAT 32. And you can't back up files bigger than 4GB on a FAT 32 drive with Retrospect. So THEN I decided I needed TWO external HD's. And THEN realized I already had a second one -- my new (old) iPod. Kind of an expensive 60 GB ext HD, but also a back up iPod in a pinch. Any comments on the best/most cost effective ways to get the backup I need and the new (new) iPod I HAVE to have?? :?: And specifically, if I enable the iPod for hard drive use on the iBook can I ALSO use PART of it as a regular iPod photo at the same time?? :?:

    About 85% satisfied but...

    Very helpful overall. But believe me, I've tried EVERY configuration suggested by anybody at GMail, and am resigned to learning to live with (and love) my waay cool google.com/ig personalized home page. However, the Fn-Delete hint alone made writing the whole post worth it! I'm ecstatic! Fn+Home/End on the other hand, still gives variable mileage in the document navigation space depending on the program. Works great in GMail editing window though. And in Word, will take you to the top, but even if you're only a few paras into a new doc takes you down into uncharted white space with no insertion point in sight! As for the horizontal scrolling thing in F.Fox, it was happening, and the about:config fix did stop it if anyone else has had this issue write to this topic and I'll look up the changes -- but one thing I think should be recommended to new iBook users is to not enable the tapping on the track pad features as many strange things seemed to happen to me (the tiniest motions were interpreted as instructions to do major things!). Also, since I tried the Entourage freeze fixes from Macfixit.com coincidentally (?) my Firefox semi-freezes also stopped. As for Neooffice/J (Open Office for OS X) as a Word altnerative, I checked and they have several Alpha level efforts to allow the conversion of WPerfect docs, but sound months away from anything a normal user would want to get into. Finally, as for the Stickies App not working, I didn't expect it would be used much, but one expects Apple's own software set up on its own Dock to at least function...... ....as not functioning sends the wrong message. Thanks again for a couple of real improvements in my Mac Life!
  25. Great (and quick) info! Thanks! However, you made me think of a new question actually. First, I will be sticking with my PC as my main big momma PShop processing machine -- at least until Macintels are on the market and pretty well unkinked -- as neither MS Word (on either platform) or Open Office can hold a candle to WordPefect and I'm a writer and photographer. So the External HD is going to need to stay on an automatic Retrospect backup schedule. So the Q is: Can I make the External drive hooked to the PC another shared volume my Mac can see from AirPort as My Documents is now?? Otherwise I'd have to copy from the Mac to the PC and then to the Ext HD. Or can I hook my Mac and my PC simultaneously to my two Firewire ports and see the drive on both? (This sounds quite dangerous, and maybe "just wrong" :shock: to me). As for a world without Gates, alas, first there's the no WPerfect for Mac situation, the ubiquitiousness of .wmv files, and then you might also check out the extensive list of switcher issues I just posted in that portion of the forum (and maybe have some ideas about?!).
