    It "hacking" frontrow wrong?

I Gotta agree with Eye_Doc on this one. If anything Apple gain out of the whole situation. I have no doubt that Apple got some useful feedback, better than any "focus group". The interest a hacked Front Row created, must have showed Apple that there's a future in this area. Although I would say to anyone thinking about downloading the hacked version - don't bother. I found Front Row to be functionally useless, takes ages to search iTunes and DVD player won't play VIDEO_TS folders copied to hard drive. Copying the iPod interface is definitely not the way to go with this sort product. I hope the next version is a lot better. Hope to see it bundled in iLife '06 in January...now that I will buy.

    Podcast problem on iPod mini

I'd definitely go for the restore option, it shouldn't take too long. If the problems still there play around with your syncing options.

Thanks doz, interesting links. I guess it's also probably an indication of how important it is for Apple to win governemt contracts
  4. Short term tech patents are maybe a good idea. If a company copied a UI more or less exactly down to the menu positions and the interations and especially the graphics. Yes, I would agree that was infringement, because it would be a clear case of copying. BUT, only if the company already had a model out (or was coming out) that could be demonstrated to have these abilities. Unfortunately, many patents are filed with no intention to produce a product, but as a means to stifle competition. If a rival produces anything remotely similar to the patent application, they'll get sued and have to pay royalties. in 2001, Creative were no where near producing a product similar to the iPod.
  5. Competitors against first and second gen iPods, the Creative Nomad Jukebox (circa 2001/02). Rio Riot (2002)

    Bit Torrent Clients

I use Transmission also, very lightweight, I leave it running for days, you can really just forget it's there. Developed by the same people who wrote Handbrake.
  9. I had two hard disk based digital music players before I bought a 2Gen 20Gb iPod in 2002. A Creative Nomad Jukebox(8Gb), Rio Riot (20Gb). Both players suffered from the following problems: - Large and heavy. Really designed for cars or sitting on a desk at work. - Booting the players took minutes (both had on/off switches). - Often froze up when encountering a song it had diffulties decoding (requiring a reboot). - USB 1.1 so slow, and syncing prone to failure. The iPod in comparison was: - Small and light (for the time). Designed to fit in a pocket. - Fast booting and the always "on" feature was fantastic (no on/off button). - No freezing, the iPod would just skip to the next song. - Firewire 400 fast and rock solid syncing. - Plus great design, great build quality, great packaging. In my experience they just got the product right. I found the interface to be one of the weaker aspects of the iPod, no ability to create playlists on the fly. Playlists only showing song title and no artist and some other things. The interface wasn't bad, just limited. There was no big marketing push for the early iPods (remember no ITMS). The look of the iPod initially created interest and then massively positive consumer feedback started a snowball effect. Of course Creative have the right to sue. If they registered their patent first and they can demonstrate that Apples interface shares strong similarities with their patent application, Creative will win. Personally I don't thing User Interfaces should be something that can be patented. It's quite possible to come up with a similar design in response to a similar design challenge. Just because you patented yours first shouldn't give you the right to own every one elses "similar" design. Patenting User Interfaces stifles progress.

    Changing Boot Chime

If you download Mactracker, you can play all the chimes. http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.p...=macosx&x=0&y=0 Useful reference, that provides info on just about any Apple product ever made.

    Best PDA for Macs

There's liturgical calendars available here for download into iCal, although I'm not sure how accurate they are. http://www.icalshare.com/ I use iCalShare calendars to keep track of sporting fixtures and national holidays. The calendars work well, synced to the iPod. Generally I would agree with your overall point, a combination of iPod, cell phone and diary/notebook is pretty efficient. I've always found entering data in organizers just too much of a pain.

    Changing Boot Chime

If you google around you'll find a few threads discussing this, like this one: http://www.applefritter.com/node/3850 The general consensus seems to be along the lines of this quote: "The chime is located outside the reach of the MacOS, embedded in the EPROM of the CPU board itself." Whilst I've read various discussions theorizing about how to change the sound, I haven't read about anyone who has actually succeeded. I was looking into this a couple of days ago, because my boot chime was no longer sounding. Although it seems to have come back today, after a power cut rather abruptly switched off my Mac - weird.

    Windows Firewire Drive on osx?

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/features.mspx Most of SP2 was security related, to counter the bashing Microsoft was getting about the lack of security features in the original XP. These two are the only real enhancements that I can see that may have required an SP update. Another couple DirectX, WMP 9 could probably have been provided by standalone download. Improved wireless support Dramatically improves and simplifies the process of discovering and connecting to wireless networks. Bluetooth technologies Enables you to easily connect to the latest Bluetooth-enabled hardware devices such as keyboards, cell phones, and PDAs.

    Steve Jobs Article

I've normally taken out a monthly subscription at Audible, it works out cheaper than paying per individual book. You can cancel at any time. $22.95 (USD) monthly subscription gets you two credits, per month. Either one or two books/newspaper/magazines etc., depending on what you choose.

Ahh good point, how could I forget about iTunes. #-o Although, when it comes to audio books, I prefer Audible over iTunes. Anything you buy in Audible is available in your "personal library", so it can be downloaded at any time in the future. There's also some nice monthly subscription deals.

    New TV Shows on iTunes!!!

You need a credit card with a US billing address (it may even have to be a US issued card, but don't think so). So if you have a relative/friend in the States, and you use their address you could probably get round the problem.

iPod as a hard drive question...

Yes you definitely can, it's how I migrated my data from Windows to Mac. Huskermn, pretty much explains the process. The iPod you attach to Windows needs to be FAT32. Either format the drive or run the iPod Sofware update. Copy the files you want to transfer, then connect to your Mac, click on the disk image and copy the files off in finder. If you want to reset the iPod for Mac use, run iPod software update on the Mac. This will reformat the drive to HFS+ from FAT32.

Alternatives to iTunes for CD Ripping?

You could use the iTunes-LAME Encoder http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo...fo/macosx/13048 and also check this forum http://forums.blacktree.com/viewforum.php?f=10 I have read some complaints about the iTunes mp3 encoder, although the AAC encoder is supposed to be OK. A number of audiophiles prefer the Lame version. Personally, with my cloth ears, I can't hear any difference. I'd be interested to know if the Lame encoder is any better.

Reviews I've read seem to consistently rate the Dell displays over the equivalent Apple. They're also very well priced.
