Need Tips: Transferring Adobe CS5 to New iMac

Gary Indiana! My hometown! If it were me, I would install Photoshop from the disc on the new computer and I would copy the Photoshop preferences file from the old computer to the new one.
  3. iPhoto can be a much cheaper option than Walgreens. A 5X7 from iPhoto is only .49 while at Walgreen it's $1.59. an 8X10 is $1.99 from Apple, $2.99 from Walgreen. 4X6 photos are .12 cents each from both places. Using iPhoto could not be easier. I've used it, it's fast and reliable.

Automatically check iTunes for application updates?

If you check the box in the General section of iTunes preferences, iTunes will check for software updates automatically. Updates for my iPod Touch apps also show up automatically.

    Repair Permissions in Leopard?

I recently had a problem where my MacBook Pro would lockup on startup. I had to use the install disc to get it to do anything. After repairing the permissions, everything ran fine. So it isn't a completely useless thing to do.

Installing new harddrives in mac pro

Doesn't the Mac Pro have room for 4 internal drives? Why pull the 500 gig drive out? Just install the new drive and use it in addition to the old one. Keep the aps and OS on the original drive and use the new drive for files.

    iTunes playlist assistance please

If it were me, I'd split the collection up into the individual albums, remove the "metallica collection" album name and replace each group with the original album names. Be sure to uncheck the part of a compilation box. This seems too obvious and probably not what you are looking for, but it would give you more flexibility.

    Rechargeable Camera Batteries

Look at the amp hour ratings. Some are 1750, some are as high as 2100. The higher ratings will last longer between charges. Most people are not aware that while regular AA batteries are 1.5 volts, rechargeables are only 1.2 volts. Not everything, like flashlights work well with rechargeable batteries.

    Desktop is Resetting?

Are there any other symptoms? Is your clock still set for the correct time? Have you replaced the battery on the motherboard? When they get weak, strange things like that start to happen.

    Macbook or Macbook Pro

The MacBook Pro only has a Firewire 800 port, it does not have a 400. The aluminum MacBooks do not have any Firewire ports, the MacBook White only has a 400.

So do we buy the current models?

If Apple came out with a mid-line tower in the $1,500 range, I'd be first in line to get one. The 8 core processor of the MacPro is just overkill and at nearly $3,000, I just can't afford it. I don't really need another monitor, especially that glossy mirror on the iMac. I've been a Mac user for over 20 years and this is the first time that I've been in the market for a computer and there hasn't been a suitable Mac for me to get.

    Mac Mini Ethernet Port Replacement

The same thing happened to my Mac after a thunderstorm. Apple sells a USB to ethernet adapter that works just fine. It says that it is for the Macbook Air only, but it works fine with my old G4. I did have an issue with it after I installed the latest update (10.5.6) but it worked just fine as long as you have OS 10.5.4 or 10.5.5. I think it was around $30. No driver needed, you just have to go to system prefs, network, and choose USB Ethernet instead of Built in Ethernet.

OS 10.5.6 feedback on the installation..?

I updated this evening and wound up with 2 problems (that I know of). First, I use an Apple USB to ethernet adapter to connect to the internet. Right after updating, I could no longer connect and the message I got said that I my cable was not connected. When I went to the system preferences / network, my system preferences would lock up and I had to force quit system prefs. I had to reinstall OSX and the updaters to get back to OS10.5.5 and all is well again. BTW, I have a G4 tower that is getting long in the tooth. I'm praying that Apple releases a new tower that is priced somewhere between a mini mac and a Pro model.

Any more news or solutions for missing Firewire?

There are Fire Wire to USB adapter cables available. Not that they are cheap, but you can get them. http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-300008044.html This reminds me of when Apple started selling computers without a floppy drive. Many people were not happy at the time. Take this as a sign that the days of Fire Wire are numbered.

    Proactively replacing hard drive

Hard drives WILL burn out. A new drive is not expensive. Better to do it when it is convenient for you than when it decides it's time to quit. I have a newer iMac than yours and have already replaced the hard drive. I'd do it soon.

    iTunes 8

The "genius" is just a way for Apple to sell more music. It tells me which albums I don't have. I don't find the genius playlists useful at all.

    Do surge protectors work?

Whole house surge protectors are not that good at protecting computers. They are more effective with air conditioners and refrigerators. Most manufacturers recommend using strip protectors for electronics in addition to whole house systems.

    Do surge protectors work?

A recent lightning storm fried our 20 inch Intel iMac (still under warranty) and an older seldom used G4. It also took out the Ethernet on another G4. In addition, it disabled one of the ports on my router, and damaged our satellite receiver. All of these devices were on cheap surge protectors but not the phone lines. My question is if I purchase the best surge protectors out there, how much better will I be protected? I know unplugging everything will be the best protection, but this storm came on so fast, I didn't have time to shut everything down before lightning struck. I've seen UPS power supplies but their surge protection specs are about the same as the $5 power strips. The best surge protectors I've seen are only $50 and I'm planning on getting a few, but will they help all that much? After the fact, I found out losing the ethernet card due to lightning is not uncommon. Finding a new ethernet card with drivers for OS10.5 is pretty hard to do. Apple's USB Ethernet adapter designed for the MacBook Air works perfectly with no drivers needed. The package says it is for MacBook Air computers only but apparently if you are running OS10.5.2 or later, it will work with any Mac. It did with my G4.
