Off Site, Online Digital Backup & Storage

Regarding the software to use, here's what I have: - Server with Linux - OpenVPN on the server side, Tunnelblick on the client side - NFS server Works perfectly, data transfer is encrypted and fast.
3. It could be the Firewire port on your iMac is defect. If you insert the installation CD/DVD for the iMac into its drive and boot up with the 'c' key pressed, you should be able to select an option to perform a Hardware Test.
4. In this case the email has no "From" set, explaining why you don't see any sender. That still doesn't explain why Mail.app has a problem with that.

Mac Virus

Sober only affects Windows platforms. It may be that your Windows PC is infected but your Macs definitely not.

Accessing a Mac from a PC

Hm, I'm a bit at a loss now...I googled for it and found that I was wrong. Windows 98 does indeed send encrypted passwords by default just as Samba expects them to be. Can you try connecting from your PC to your mac again and cut and paste the output found in Console (/Applications/Utilities/Console) here?

Favorite food/drink

As for food, I'd go for a Southern German dish called "Schaeuferla" (pronunciation would be something like /shoiferler/) which is pork served with dumplings and a great sauce. Here's what it looks like: As for drinks, I'd say Spezi (that's Coke + Lemonade) as it's called here in Germany or Dr Pepper.

The Simpsons at Macworld

It would certainly be huge if Apple landed a deal with Fox bringing The Simpsons to iTunes. However, I suppose it's only going to affect the US store (at least for the time being) since there are so many different licences and licencees in the world that would prohibit marketing "the product" in other ways than usually arranged for. It's a shame at any rate.

AppZapper does'nt get everything.

That's true, I noticed that on Garageband - it left the 3 Gig of files in /Library totally untouched.

Accessing a Mac from a PC

IIRC Windows 98 transmits passwords for shares in plain text while Samba (as installed on OS X) expects them to be encrypted.
11. Hey Mac geeks, I'm a recent convert, now using Safari (instead of Firefox) and I'm experiencing a kinda annoying thing: Safari doesn't seem to store cookies longer than 24 hours even though the cookies have much longer lifetimes set. I've been going through the configuration options but to no avail. Can anyone point me in the right direction? -Christian

Accessing a Mac from a PC

You have to make sure that you are using the same username on Windows that you are using on your Mac.

Ergonomic mouse & keyboard

As for the mouse, I can recommend Logitech's Cordless Click Plus Optical which is also available as a rechargeable kit with a desktop charger. Comes at around $30 US, I think.

protected file

The safest way would be to enable FileVault but I have heard of people having problems after enabling it.
16. In iTunes, click on iTunes->Preferences->Advanced->Import and select the bitrate that you would like to use. You can also change the converter (i.e. AAC or MP3) if you like. Click OK. Then select the respective files in your library, right-click (that would be Control-click, I guess) and select 'Convert selection to AAC' (this may also be 'Convert selection to MP3', depending on what you selected in the first step. After a few moments the files will have been converted - but they will have been added to the library so you will most likely have duplicates, so delete the old files.

Are you sure you have the necessary permissions to delete that file?

Still can't network Mac to on main PC

First of all: I can confirm what macSibbern wrote concerning XP Home's network 'capabilities' - it's very rudimentary (at best) compared to Professional. At any rate, since performing remote analyses is somewhat difficult let me just give you a few things you could try: On the Windows machine, open (or create) a file named "hosts" (no extension) in c:windowssystem32driversetc. In there, add a line giving the IP address of your iBook followed by a tab followed by the hostname that you have configured for your iBook (you can see the hostname by selecting 'Sharing' in System Preferences) The line should just read<tab>ibookhostname replacing by the iBook's IP address, <tab> by pressing the tab key and ibookhostname by the hostname. Make sure you press 'Enter' after the hostname so you add an empty new line below. Just to make sure you should restart windows and then (with the iBook running and connected) start up a command window by pressing Windows+R and entering 'cmd'. In there enter 'ping ibookhostname' where ibookhostname should again be substituted as above. If you receive any replies this is good, your PC seems to be able to contact your iBook. You should now ensure that the workgroup name is identical on both the iBook and the PC. On the PC you can find out the workgroup name by selecting 'System' in the control panel and there selecting the 'computer name' (or similar) tab. Probably you won't be able to change that name in XP Home, so you'll have to change it on the iBook if it differs. In order to do that, open /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access. In that application, select SMB/CIFS and click 'configure'. Set the workgroup accordingly. You may have to restart the iBook, I'd do - just to be sure. Now back to the PC. Close the Command window and once again press Windows+R but this time enter ibookhostnamesharename (once again substitute ibookhostname with the hostname and sharename with the name of the share you set up in OSX (usually this will be your short username; you can see the proper share name by selecting 'Windows Sharing' from the 'Sharing' preference pane in System Preferences). If this doesn't work, you'll probably have to figure out how to uninstall Symantec's firewall. If I remember correctly the uninstaller is somewhere in C:Program FilesSymantec* and has a very misleading name so keep searching. Hope this helps! -Christian

Yeah, but not necessarily an iSight camera

Webcam for security

What software are you talking about? All you need is a web browser to view the live stream or still images produced by the cam.

Webcam for security

Sure, if one already owns a Mac with an accompanying iSight, then this is probably first choice (despite the fact that the power consumption of the Mac is presumably higher than that of a networked webcam). But if no webcam is present yet, then an iSight is probably more expensive than the smallest Axis webcam.

Webcam for security

I recommend taking a closer look at the webcam products from AXIS which all are servers themselves, i.e. you do not need a dedicated machine to have the webcam running. They have wireless and wired webcams and you can access those through any web browser. You may restrict access by username and password or keep them unlocked. I personally used an AXIS 205 which I got as bargain at eBay for approx. $110 US.

Still can't network Mac to on main PC

I believe to have posted this reply just yesterday and it seems to have disappeared - so I'm posting it again: What OSes are you using on the PCs? Is the setup identical (or at least similar) in both locations?
24. Yeah, but as thinksecret.com reports this seems to be a "glitch".

XP Thunderbird to Mail Conversion

Do you have any chance of (temporarily) getting an IMAP account from some ISP or eMail provider? This would certainly be a viable solution since you could just move all mail to the IMAP server and then (in Mail.app) back into your local account. Update: After a quick googling I came up with http://www.emailaddresses.com/email_imap.htm, you'll probably find a suitable offer there.
