    Can anything be done

So I found a combo drive on ebay for $25. An 8123A. The mini is not detecting it and I managed to get a dvd stuck in there while trying to see if it would work. I've tried resetting the PRAM to see if that would help the mini recognize it. Also I've tried the mouse/restart trick to eject it and nothing. The combo drive lights up (red), but it's not showing in the system profiler.

    Can anything be done

Thanks guys, I am going to try a clean install. First I have to find a firewire DVD burner, since my super drive is no longer working.

    Can anything be done

I am currently using a 1st gen G4 Mac Mini 1.25Ghz. Now that it's over 4 years old and a G4, it has gotten very slow. I've upgraded the hardware as much as it will allow, and I'm really not in a position to buy a new Mac. My question is, will an OS upgrade help speed things up? I know Snow Leopard is Intel only, but would Leopard do me any good?

    Thinking of a new camera

I've been looking at the PowerShot sx200IS. What does anyone think of that camera?

    Thinking of a new camera

I've seen quite a few good deals on refurbed cameras. Would you recommend that?

    Thinking of a new camera

Hello all. I'm am currently researching a new camera to replace a Kodak EasyShare 4730. I want something with at least 10X zoom, while the wife wants to be able to record decent video as well. For pricing, I've narrowed it down to 2 choices: The Kodak EasyShare Z1015IS (new $219) and the FujiFilm S8100fd (factory refurbished for $164). The Kodak does HD video which may be a plus. But some reviews have not been kind. With either camera, I'd like to take nice photos of my son as he romps around. Also take some good photos on trips. I was wondering if anyone on the forum had experience with either or could suggest a camera. Thanks.

What to do about my old Mac Mini

Unfortunately I don't have any firewire devices. I recently had a firewire DVD burner, but it crapped out on me. I will try to defrag the HD and see if that helps. The OS has been installed for over 2 years now, so I imagine the disk is pretty scattered. I'm hoping by the end of the year, to replace it with a new or refurbished Intel iMac. I saw a 20" on apple.com for $800.

What to do about my old Mac Mini

I have a 1st gen Mac Mini with a 1.25Ghz G4 processor, running Mac OS X Tiger. At this point it's 4 years old and getting quite sluggish. I am in no financial condition to purchase a new computer. the memory is maxed out at 1GB. I would like to do what can to preserve it for another few months. The internal super drive does not work anymore, and just spits out any cd or dvd I put in it. I have an external USB dvd burner, but I have read that PPC macs won't boot from a USB drive. I've run Onyx on several occasions and that doesn't really help. Is there anything else I can do other than reinstalling the OS or running Onyx to help rejuvenate it?

    Pioneer Super Drive trouble

I have a pioneer super drive that I purchased from OCW almost 3 years ago. It's worked fine until recently. Lately, all it does is eject whatever disk I put into it, blank cd's/dvd', music cd's, and movies. I've tried cleaning it with 2 different lens cleaners (when it will accept them). I still get the same results. Is this thing fried or is there something I can do to fix it. If it's fried please give me a heads up on where I can find a combo drive. I have a first gen mac mini that's getting long in the tooth and don't want to spend $100 on another super drive. And I've had a helluva time finding combo drives online.

    iWork 08 questions

Good points. I'm only griping because I don't think my wife (who's in school right now) would adjust to using Pages. I was succesfully able to get her to use NeoOffice in place of MS Office. With NeoOffice she'll at least be able to save files to .doc or .ppt format sans much tinkering. NeoOffice can be set to save them by default. Perhaps I'll use iWork and she can use NeoOfice.

    iWork 08 questions

First of all, it's not your 24" monitor. The format bar is really small on my 17". I installed the trial version, and don't plan to purhcase it. I don't like that the only way to save .doc files is to export them as such. Even files that are already .doc have to be exported as such. that doesn't make much sense to me. I find NeoOffice to be much easier and have a better layout. Alos I think pages shuld have 'Save', 'Print', 'New', etc in a standard format bar. I think Keynote is awesome but would be concerned that all the neat features would not translate in PowerPoint. Do they?
  12. Hello all, I'm in the process of downloading Neo Office and was wondering how well the formatting is maintained when sending files to people who use Word. For example if I were to create a resume and email it to a potential employer, they open it using MS Word, would the document open looking the same?

Cheap switch to use garage band and iLife

I have a first gen Mac Mini. If had it for a little over 2 years now, and have been using it as my main computer. Since i've had it, I've upgraded to 1GB of RAM, a SuperDrive, and recently to an 80GB HD (only because the original failed). It does everything I need it to. An Intel-based mini would be ideal if that's what your budget calls for, but don't be too leary of a PPC-based mini if it's a steal. Upgrade the ram and you be able to run iLife with no problems.

Viable HD replacements for the mca mini

I went with an 5400 RPM 80GB Seagate Momentus. So far so good.
  15. Hi all, For a 4th time the orignal hard drive in my mac mini has failed me. Somehow in each previous instance, the HD has revived itself. My question is, what would be a reliable solution for a replacement? Or what brand should I stay away from? Thanks
