MacBook Pro HD in a Macbook

My friend just upgraded his MacBook Pro and gave me his old hard drive. I already backed up my mac to an external. Can I just stick the MB Pro drive in my MB or will I run into firmware issues or some other problem. Thanks, //Edit: More info: I'm running 10.4.11 and he's using Leopard.

    Problem with External HDs

That's what I want to know. I want someone to fix it. I just don't know who's problem it is. Not yet, I'll try that.

    Problem with External HDs

No message. The drive I had before these two was in a different brand enclosure and had the same problems. I took it by the genius bar yesterday, but they could not figure out what was wrong.

    Problem with External HDs

[ Sorry this is so long. If you like the first and last paragraphs will give you the gist of my question. ] So, I'm currently on my fourth external hard drive since I purchased my current Macbook. They generally do not function properly. For example. When I try to manually backup files in finder, sometimes folders will copy over and other times not. I've never successfully backed-up my entire user folder at once, but sometimes I can copy files one folder at a time. Yesterday I was able to copy about 80% of my files one folder at a time (i.e. pics, design work, docs, etc). When I went to copy my music folder (largest file size of the folders) to the external not only did it not copy the files, the hard drive completely stopped responding. It wouldn't eject, and after several shutdowns and restarts I still couldn't get my computer to read/write to it properly. My trash even stopped working as a result of this. That is just the most recent example. That doesn't even touch the problems using the drives with Final Cut Pro. This has been happening on this macbook since I got it. I've tried four different hardrives and enclosures. I am currently using a Seagate Barracuda 500GB drive in a NexStar 3 enclosure (via firewire) and a Western Digital Caviar 640 GB in a NextStar 3 enclosure (via USB). Both are SATA. The firewire drive sometimes works and the usb one almost never does. I'll be in Houston this weekend and was thinking about taking my mac by a genius bar since I still have a year or two left on my applecare. Is this the kind of issue they would help me with? Does anyone else have any experience with MacBook external HD issues and/or getting Apple to help you with them? Given that it happens with different drives and cases, I assume my Macbook is to blame. Converting AVI to DVD format

I like WhatSize. I went ahead and deleted about 17GB worth of caches, random files, and apps that I needed to re-install anyway. That didn't fix the imovie problem, but I'm going to give VisualHub a try.

    Converting AVI to DVD format

I agree. I've been thinking that if I freed up more space my computer would perfrom better. I do have some issues. I checked to see what I have that I can delete, and found just about nothing. However, I can't account for around 28+ GB of space that my computer says is used. I can't figure out what is using it. Has anyone ever heard of your mac thinking you have way less space avaiable than you really do?

    Converting AVI to DVD format

twitfan - When try to use iMovie it says I don't have enough free space on my HD. In this particular instance, I'm trying to burn a 650mb file. I have 2.6 GB free on my drive. I don't remember what error I got last time I tried, I think the movie was too long for use in iMovie. Graham - I'll try mpeg streamclip, and yeah I can play it on my Mac. I just often want to share things with other people or watch it in my main room, that kind of thing. I can't seem to get it off my Mac.

    Get Ratings off my iPod

Thanks, that did it. It took all of 15 seconds; quite a bit faster than any of the alternatives I could think of.
  10. I was trying to convert all my songs from the itunes format to mp3 so that my tivo would play them. In the middle of doing so, I ran out of disk space. My files were so jumbled up that I deleted them all and copied the songs from my back-up drive. Little did I know, itunes doesn't store song rating info in the files. I have rated copies of all my songs on my ipod. Is there any way to get itunes to take the ratings off the ipod? I haven't plugged my ipod into my mac yet because I'm afraid it will overwrite the ipod with unrated versions of my library.

    Quicktime in Firefox Won't Work

I repaired the permissions on my mac, and now Firefox has no problem with quicktime. I'm not sure what the problem was, but that fixed it.

    Quicktime in Firefox Won't Work

I'll try re-organizing my apps, but if not I'll just use Safari untill something changes.

    Quicktime in Firefox Won't Work

Already have perian component, no extensions and MIME set to defaults. When I was checking on perian, I noticed that my applications seem to be a little crazy. 95% are located here: - HD:Users:Chris:Applications - a few of them including quicktime are located here: - HD:Applications -. I think they all used to be located in the same place; probably the root applications folder. Mac programs do a good job of keeping track of things even if they change locations. Is it possible that firefox is having trouble finding QT? Also, I noticed that if I start loading a trailer in safari, it will work firefox.

    Quicktime in Firefox Won't Work

I did indeed try what you said. I uninstalled both firefox, and quicktime using app zapper. I did not re-import any of my bookmarks or extensions so I am running a totally new and clean version of firefox & QT. And, yet it still does not work. For example here are some trailers of different types (standard: med, sm, lg, & HD: 480) that work in Safari, but not in firefox: * http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/bl...lory/large.html * http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_picture...er2_medium.html * http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/slowburn/small.html * http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/musicandlyrics/trailer1a/ * http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/trade/hd/

    Quicktime in Firefox Won't Work

I've done some more testing and it seems that trailers with an HD option do not work while trailers with no HD option do work. I always try the medium non-HD version of the trailers, and the trailers with an HD icon seem to be less likely to work. /// Edit: After even further testing, I don't think this is a factor. I've found small, medium, large, and HD trailers all with the same error.
