iPhone 3.1 software update - major problems

Well 2 days in since the 3.1.2 update and no comas which is the longest it's been since the debacle that was 3.1, so great for me, however there seems to be many still who it has not fixed the problem, no idea what the problem for them could be, can only theorize that different hardware configurations of iPhones maybe the persistent issue for those people - I feel their pain, especially since many such as I have the issue licked. I sincerely Apple issue another fix the issue for all versions of iPhone and ipod touch

iPhone 3.1 software update - major problems

Strange isn't it, I did the Itunes reinstall last week and it didn't make any difference for me? I still am getting the problem, but it seems to be reduced by disabling 3g and wifi, good that you are not seeing the problem though, I guess it may be hardware dependent, what model phone do you have?

iPhone 3.1 software update - major problems

Graham, thanks for taking the time and the interest to respond. I am contacting my local store (186 miles away - not so local!) to arrange a genius bar appointment tommorrow, you can only book 72 hrs in advance apparently! The girl I spoke to recently at the store in question said that she has the problem on here own 3G and a colleague in the shop who has a 2G also has the problem! They both feel that the only reliable way to fix the issue (they had themselves tried all the tricks known to the Apple genius staff to no avail) was to wait for a fix, which they had no idea when it would appear, when I pressed them to see if they would contemplate swapping my 3G (out of warranty) for another with 3.0.1 they couldn't guarantee 1) They could and 2) Even if they could, whether it would have 3.0.1. so even if I gamble and make a 400 mile round trip I have no guarantee of a happy ending. I appreciate that you have 30 owners who are unaffected but if you take the trouble to visit this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?t...&start=1980 you will see that hundreds if not thousands are affected with extremely similar symptoms ranging from coma like behavior to dreadful battery life. Throughout the existing 133 pages the only known proven fix for most is to hack their iPhones into installing 3.0.1, this is not an action I 1)Feel comfortable doing and 2) Shoudn't need to resort to if Apple only gave me some hope. Anyway, I subsequently have found that I have reduced the bug somewhat by disabling wifi and 3g, not ideal but at least my iPhone doesn't fall into an unresponsive state so often (on average 3 to 4 times a day) Thanks again for your suggestion, I feel my only true hope of a solution is luck and benevolence from someone at the Apple store who has a 3.0.1 to swap me, or to wait for a fix from Apple and lord knows when/if it will appear. Phil

Hi Tim, just to say I disabled wifi and 3g and went a full 2 days before it went into a coma again. I along with many others on the Apple discussion forums strongly suspect the update to the radio firmware is the problem, however ymmv depending on your model of phone. Have you seen any improvement after reinstalling Itunes, it certainly didn't work for me? Just wish Apple would say something to give us some idea of when a fix is likely or at least a statement that they are working it - won't be holding my breath for that one!

iPhone 3.1 software update - major problems

Dolphbucs, We are on the same side - honestly, it genuinely pains me to criticise Apple, since I became a user of Apple products since buying my Mac Mini 2 years ago having given up on Vista I have extolled to all my friends and colleagues the benefit of going to the Mac platform, AND still wish to, it's just I am not so rock solid confident having seen how Apple work when a problem exists. Our differences aside, I will do as I said in my earlier post and try and see what my "local - lol" store will offer me, in the meantime I am experimenting with wifi and 3g off and will report back in a day or so. BTW I never asked you had you experienced any issues yourself? I guess not as I am sure you would have said so? If not are you running a 3GS with 3.1? All the best Phil

Huskermn, yup you did but without being unkind you don't represent Apple and this is my first experience of NEEDING Apple Customer Support and frankly I feel let down, hence I needed to validate what you were absolutely correct about. And that I have. I just find it very disappointing that having chosen a first class product with a company who have (had?) the best reputation for customer support, what I have received is absolutely NIL support. I said to the support guy that whatever Apple did (Corrupt download, Itunes install, Broken 3.1 update) my phone is now practically useless to me in the job I have, he said there was nothing he could do about that, but did accept it was an Apple issue under investigation, so yes they broke my phone but wont offer me ANY immediate support, and I did explain I am in the military and the importance of being reachable, he would not even offer a phone with 3.0.1 installed - exceptionally disappointing don't you agree? Yes I know your analogy about vehicles etc etc. But one thing is for certain, if the brakes failed or had potential to fail due to a faulty part from the manufacturer a product recall would happen and damned quick! I am not saying this fault is life threatening but all 3g/3gs owners do now not have a fuzzy warm feeling that they can depend on their phone at that critical time it could be needed. The Apple experience is decidedly not impressing me and I could not recommend a purchase of an Apple product to anyone after this sorry tale. Phil PS That Apple thread is now 116 pages and I am not in a minority with how hundreds/thousands are feeling how Apple are not responding - yup I know the policy as you told me from the outset, but it isn't winning customers is it?

iPhone 3.1 software update - major problems

Just as an update: I tried reinstalling Itunes after doing a deep removal of the original Itunes then restored the phone as a new iPhone. Thought the problem was fixed as I went 24 hrs without noticing the issue then it started again, now I am getting it 2 - 3 times a day. I spoke to level 2 customer support yesterday, the guy admitted that Apple know of the problem that is being particularly reported on the Apple discussion forums, when pushed about acknowledging the issue he emphatically stated that Apple will NEVER acknowledge ANY hardware/software problems until they have ISSUED the fix, I said that leaves everybody in the dark as to what they are doing about it, his only reply was that is current Apple policy! So basically it could be months before we see a fix and Apple will not say a single word on the matter until they release a fix, so much for customer service!

Well Dolphbucs the Apple forum may have posters who can be bothered to post, from your and Huskermn's advice you all stay tight lipped in the supreme confidence that Apple will make it all better eventually without you needing to kick up a fuss! And I am not having a go honestly, also I noticed that many of the forum threads here have very few replies, certainly the case for the iPhone forum where the first page has typically less than 10 replies per thread! not sure what that means for 4000 plus members? Unless your implying that the posters on the Apple forum are just a bunch of whingers who have nothing better to do with their time?

iPhone 3.1 software update - major problems

Well the forum thread has just hit 100 pages http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?t...85&tstart=0 And most are all frustrated as hell that Apple are saying nothing - it's not just my view hundreds of people are expressing the same thought that Apple are letting us down badly by not at least acknowledging the problem!
