    Network Mystery?

And my comcast cable modem uses 192.168.100.1, so the best thing is to just look at the router address in Network Prefs.

    Wireless Connectin Query.

I think that in general people who have data that is worth protecting will learn how to protect it, and people who don't learn can't complain when something happens. Its like not locking your car, and blaming the dealer for not showing you how to lock it. Internet security is not that difficult, and there are lot of resources that cover all of the important topics in a simple straight-forward manner. If anybody is interested, I would recommend SecurityNow! with Steve Gibson. You can download the archive of shows on MP3 from www.grc.com/securitynow.htm Towards the beginning of the series that had 4-5 episode block on wireless router security, starting with WEP and its flaws, right up to VPNs for using public wifi.

    Wireless Connectin Query.

I live an a managed community in San Jose, and I have a 6Mbit Cable. I always leave my wireless network open, and i secure my machines, using personal firewalls and VPN. When I arrived here I had to use a neighbours Wifi until we got ours installed, and it think its a decent thing to do to share it around. Pay it forward you know.

    Wireless Connectin Query.

I quite like the Air Traffic control widget. Its handy cause its not obtrusive it jus t runs in the backgroud, but its quite powerfull, it give the SSID, RSSI security etc of the nearby wireless networks, and I have found that it will find more networks then the airport drop list.

    Network Mystery?

Ok, what you need to do is disable the wireless access point. Most wireless routers have a web based interface, so you can use that. If you go to System Preferences -> Network -> Ethernet you should see an IP address for your router. Copy and Paste that into Safari (or whatever browser) and you should get a pretty web based interface. Im not sure about your particular router, but on most you can select "Wireless" somewhere and disable it (you may need to go into advanced mode) If you run into difficulty let me know what router it is and ill have a dig around for the full proceedure

MacBook Pro trashed by Apple Repair Centre

I dont recall the name of the other company that we had used, but that was over 2 years ago. Last time I used mactivate was December 2005. I bought a powerbook in november and the keyboard broke within 2 weeks. It was pretty annoying having it break so soon after buying it, but having the whole thing take care of in less then 48 hours at zero cost took the sting out of it. They even picked up the laptop and dropped it back.

MacBook Pro trashed by Apple Repair Centre

I've dealt with Mactivate a lot, I worked in a University and we had about 60 macs, eMacs, iMacs (G3, G4 and G5), Powermacs (G4, G5) and a couple of laptops, (iBook G3, G4 and Powerbook G3, G4) As a lot of the machines were older models we had a lot of upgrades done here and there. We had 6 of our iMac G5s go down because of a Logic Board failure, 2 busted optical drives on the laptops, and various issues with the G4/G5 Powermacs. I always used Mactivate in Dublin, and I found them to be quick and friendly. They always kept me informed as to the state of our repairs and so when the keyboard on my new 12" Powerbook broke I called them up. Within 36 hours of the phone call they had my laptop couriered back to me in pristine condition. I have dealt with other service centres before that were disappointing, buy having dealt with Mactivate I don’t think I would use anybody else.

    should I move to Firefox

Incidently if you are trying out browsers, the new version of Opera is pretty good, and Camino looks nice, but is missing a lot of the cool functionality of Firefox.

    should I move to Firefox

The only feature that Safari has that I miss in firefox is that Safari uses my Keychain. I need to enter a second password in firefox, and the firefox password manager is less secure then keychain.

    File Sharing 2 Macs

If you want to connect using personal file sharing the best way is to explicitly connect using AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) Click Go->Connect to Server, [Command+K] and type afp://<friends-computername>.local you can find the computer name if you go to Preferences->Sharing. Here is says If you want to allow people to connect without signing in you should be able to just use your <home>/public directory

    Parallels user report

Yeah I've found parallels to be pretty good. One thing that it doesnt do very well is usb forwarding of non storage devices. I've got a usb mic and a skype phone that dont work, but im told my parallels support and they says itll be in the next release.

    External Sound Cards

Ok, I've seen a lot of post on various forums recommending the Griffin Technologies Firewave, but it isn't due for general release until Mid July. Its priced at $99 so hopefully that release will be in 2-3 weeks and then we can all bask in the beauty of full 5.1 surround sound on our Macs!

    External Sound Cards

Hey, I've just bought a Mac Mini, with a 23" Cinema Display, and TVMicro USB Tuner which I have set up, all nice an pretty, in my living room as a home entertainment centre. However, I miss the surround sound from my old PC setup. Can anybody recommend a 5.1 or 7.1 sound card, that is USB or firewire and mac compatable. I've had a look around and it ain't easy.

Do all you Gmail users pop to clients?

Hmmm, I should have previewed that, it sounds kinda mean. There is nothing wrong with not leaving your house for weeks on end Thats just not me, and I'm sorry if it came across as a cheap shot.

Do all you Gmail users pop to clients?

Hmmm, I use Mail.app to pull my gmail, but I also leave my house! I think that people reading this forum are gonna set a stereotype that all "Gmail Poppers" are reclusive. The one great thing about the web interface is it automatically logs me into GoogleTalk IM so I can see whos online. (Way Cool)

    Connection Sharing

First, ensure that both Airport and Ethernet are active in SystemPreferences->Network->PortConfiguration Then go to sharing, activate sharing on your airport ->share from etherenet Using a CAT5 Cross-over cable connect your mini to your xbox. That should do it.

    Ultra portable Mac?

I've got a 12" powerbook, and I'd trade up to a 12" MacBook Pro in a heartbeat. I've seen the Vaio UMPC and it really doesn't look like you could use it on a day to day basis. Having said that if apple could drop the optical drive, maybe ship with an external, like the Sony Vaio X505 or the Dell Latitude X1, they are very thin, and if apple could match that I'd be very impressed.

Looking for a New Wireless Router

Hmm, well my somewhat biased opinion would be to go for a linksys, they have a wide range of wireless routers, each aimed at a specific audience, so whether its gaming, VoIP, or a standard wireless home network, linksys have a secure, easy to use solution. Incidently they arent the cheapest on the market, but I think theyre worth the money. I have a WRT54G which works great, and I've heard good things about the MIMO routers, SRX200 I believe.
  20. Hey, As recent switcher I'm always on the lookout for compelling reasons for ditching windows! I use Gizmo's VoIP solution to call the US from Ireland for 1c a minute, which is great. I'm moving there for the summer to work and I wanted my dad to be able to VoIP me from his Vaio X505. He has bluetooth headset that I was planning to use, which I had set up on my Mac in all of about 10 seconds. Add Device->Headset->Passcode->DONE On Windows XP it took 2 hours! First you've gotta get the latest widcomm drivers, then you've gotta add the device, reconfigure the sound card setup. Absolute NIGHTMARE! Can't believe people put up with such hassle.

I'm really interested in the rumours about a tablet vesrion of OSX, If they name it Feral, we could have a cat and mouse scenario between the two!
