Web Sharing & Firewall - Viruses?

Thanks for the explanation! Definitely clarifies my understanding.
  2. I think I've got a problem. I recently turned on/activated Web Sharing, but I forgot to turn on the Firewall. Now I think I may have gotten malware, viruses, or some other sort of bad stuff on my machine. Am I right in this thinking? If so, what steps might I take to offset the damage? Thanks. Quick background note: I was experimenting with the using the Apache server that comes built in with Mac (because I'm learning mysql, php, etc.) And this tutorial mentions the importance of activating the Firewall if the user turns on Web Sharing http://www.macinstruct.com/node/112 Specs: OS 10.6.6 Processor 2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3

Web Sharing & Firewall - Viruses?

Right now, the Activity Monitor>CPU shows approximately -57% idle -8-9% User -2-3% System But I don't have much open right now because it's the end of my work-day. But I'll check again tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

Web Sharing & Firewall - Viruses?

Sorry, I should have included that. My system seems to be running slower than normal. Not a huge difference, but definitely noticeable.

Thanks for those additional clarifying details. Regarding your question, ... most of the time, I'm working at home and connecting via wireless. I use Time Capsule as my router.

    Time Machine - backup full

Hi- TimeMachine failed to do a backup and displayed the following error: "The backup disk is full. ... Time Machine deleted one or more old backups to make room for new backups. To avoid deleting additional old backups, open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk." I only have one backup disk, namely, 500GB Time Capsule. I don't understand why it's full when my computer that I'm backing up to is only 250GB. So it seems strange that 500GB can't backup a computer with a max size of 250GB. Any ideas on why this might be? --------------------------- Additional specs/details: OSX 10.6.5 Processor 2.53 GHz Memory: 4GB Hardrive capacity: 249.72GB Available: 64.01GB Used: 185.71GB

    Time Machine - backup full

Disregard my earlier request: I figured out what the problem was. I had multiple sparsebundles that TimeMachine was treating as separate backups. Solution: what worked for me was to delete the multiple sparsebundles (Finder>Time Capsule>login/mount>delete sparsebundles) and start with a new backup.

    MobileMe & Keychain won't sync

Found the solution re Problem #2 via Mac documentation (quoted below). If you are prompted for the keychain password of a computer to which you no longer have access, or if you are prompted for a keychain password that you do not remember, you can reset the master keychain password file used during syncing: 1. Back up any sync data that you wish to keep on the affected computers. You could use the MobileMe Backup application or Mac OS X as described here. 2. Reset the master keychain password file with these advanced instructions: 3. In the Finder, choose Utilities from the Go menu. 4. Open Terminal. 5. In the Terminal window, enter the appropriate command for the version of Mac OS X you are using: * If you are using Mac OS X v10.6, type (or copy and paste) the following command on a single line: /System/Library/Frameworks/SecurityFoundation.framework/Versions/A/kcSync.app/Contents/MacOS/kcSync -reset * If you are using Mac OS X v10.5, or earlier, type (or copy and paste) the following command on a single line: /System/Library/Frameworks/SecurityFoundation.framework/Versions/A/Resources/kcSync.app/Contents/MacOS/kcSync -reset 6. Press Return. 7. After the command has executed, you should see a message in Terminal such as "Removing /Library/Keychains/.syncinfo/ login.keychain.syncinfo.plist was successful." 8. Quit Terminal. 9. Make sure MobileMe Sync is enabled by choosing System Preferences from theApple () menu, clicking the MobileMe icon, then clicking the Sync tab. You may need to re-enable keychain synchronization on any synchronizing computer after taking these steps. Keychain may prompt you to update your settings in a variety of applications.

    MobileMe & Keychain won't sync

Hello- My Mac experienced the blue screen of death yesterday, and to make a long story short, I had to do a clean reinstall. After reinstalling software and entering new passwords in my Keychain, I then went to sync my passwords with my MobileMe account, but then I lost all the passwords that had been saved there. 1. Is there any way I can restore this? (I have TimeMachine but hadn't set it up yet after this new reinstallation). 2. Also, the system displayed this message: To synchronize your keychain on this computer, enter the password for your user account on [the name of my computer] Attempted solutions: I have tried entering both my Computer and MobilMe login, but neither one works. What am I doing incorrectly and/or how can I fix this? Thanks.

    App for Intl Collaboration

Hi- I'm a grad student in the U.S. who's collaborating with another grad student in Namibia Africa. I'm wondering if there are any good iPhone apps for voip. I've downloaded Fring and that looks pretty promising. Because we're both students, we don't have lots of money and so we're looking for the most economical or cost-effective options. Any ideas? Thanks.

    CleanMyMac?

Hi- Has anyone tried CleanMYMac http://www.macpaw.com/cleanmymac ? Apparently, it gets rid of "... useless files that basically pile up and waste your valuable disk space. ... [and] numerous support files, which won't just get to Trash once you remove the app." Thanks!
  13. Our family uses iTunes to stream music through our house (e.g., Bose speakers), but every once in a while, the streaming/music stops. Usually, the connection resumes after 10-15 seconds, but it's been happening more regularly over the last few weeks. Any ideas or suggestions as to what might be causing this problem? Thanks. Additional details/specs: -We use Time Capsule as our router -We have 2 MacBook Pros and 1 MacBook on our local home network -We have installed the latest Software updates

    Snow Leopard - Firewall

Hi- I just installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro and I'm wondering if I should further expand or widen the security options by selecting the "Block all incoming connections" option, or if enabling the Firewall is sufficient? Thanks.
  15. Hi- I'm taking a statistics course in which I need to draw various graphs and curves. For my more formal assignments, I use SPSS, but when I'm just doing drawings for my notes and study purposes, I want something that's fairly quick and easy. I'm probably going to buy Omni Graffle because in using the trial version, I've found it to be quite versatile, quick and easy to use. But I'm wondering if there might be any other software out there that might be less expensive and easy to use. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Project / Task Manager for iPhone

Hello- Does anybody know of a good task manager/project manager for the iPhone that's reasonably priced? Thanks. Quick background note: I bought OmniFocus for my MacBook Pro based partly on the assumption that I could use it for my iPhone, but then I found out that they charge an additional $20 on top of what I already paid for the desktop version and so I'm looking for alternatives.

Mac Mail client - SMTP - Cannot send error msg

It turns out that I had to first configure it through my university's VPN and then it worked. Thanks for your post.
  18. Hello- I've added an IMAP account to my Mac Mail client and I'm able to receive mail just fine, but when I attempt to send mail, the system gives me the following error message -- Cannot send message using the server This IMAP account is associated with the university I'm attending but when I contact them, they just send me a generic set of instructions that doesn't resolve the problem. Any suggestions on how I might troubleshoot this? Thanks much! Steps taken: Verified login id and password are correct Tried 3 different outgoing/smtp port settings: 25, 465, 587

Mac Mail client - SMTP - Cannot send error msg

Thanks, yes, I've read about that (i.e., "Some won't allow you to send other domains mail through it ..."), but since the university I'm at offers IMAP and provide the configuration details for sending mail (SMTP), then it seems kind of strange to me why I couldn't send mail. But maybe I'm just clueless on this larger email stuff. And yes, the Terminal just times out. Thanks for your suggestions!

Mac Mail client - SMTP - Cannot send error msg

No, I haven't ever been able to send mail using that server. I've also tried using another account's smtp server, but no luck there either.

    Time Capsule

Not sure if I should post this in the Hardware forum, so apologies in advance if I should post this question somewhere else ... One of our family members uses a Mac PowerBook (10.4.11) and accesses the Internet using our local network. How does he access Time Capsule? Thanks.
