    Start up MacBook Pro 2011

Greetings, Thank you for the "most liked" content on September 4, 2012... However... Survival of a MacBook Pro 2011... Recently, my laptop began booting with a folder and question mark. Help from YouTube, my dad, and a very small tool kit... Offered me the opportunity to boot my Macintosh HD via hard drive enclosure. However, before I take any final steps to replace the hard drive cable.... Is there anything I should be weary about? How long can a hard drive survive in an enclosure? Thanks again~

    External hard drive disconnect

I have a Mid 2001 27 inch iMac and I store my movies and music on an external USB hard drive and I have have my time machine and super duper on a 2 different firewire hard drives. When my Mac comes out of sleep mode I lose my USB drives after a couple seconds and my firewire drives after 15 seconds or so. I never had this problem before and I have to re-sync my iTunes account each time the hard drives are disconnected. Any ideas to why they disconnect? Thanks ~Jeff
  3. Hi, I am getting ready to transfer data on to my new hard drive from a failing one in my early 2008 macbook. I have a good clean copy of the drive on super duper. Do I need to have the operating system on the new hard drive before dragging and dropping the super duper clone on it? Running mountain lion 10.8.3 Thanks

    MacBook Pro upgrades

This past Thursday evening, I upgraded the 13" MacBook Pro that I bought back in late February. I took the ram from 4 gig to 8 gig. I also replaced the original Toshiba 500 gig 5400 rpm drive with a 750 gig Seagate Momentus XT hybrid 7200 rpm drive. I have noticed a ton of difference in the speed with both upgrades. Before the upgrade, when I used Parallels to boot into Windows for office work, the system would start paging in and out a lot with swap space growing to 2 gig sometimes. Now with the extra ram, I have increased the allotted ram for Parallels from 1 gig to 2.5 gig with a video ram increase to 512 meg. Even with that, I have no pages out and swap space remains at zero. The drive upgrade has greatly increased the speed of the machine. Boot time went from around a minute to less than 30 seconds from a cold start. App launch times are noticeably faster. Launching things like the Mail app or Safari would cause the icon in the dock to bounce 4 or 5 times and eventually come up to the screen. With the new drive upgrade, in the instance of Mail.app, the icon bounces once and, in fact, the main Mail screen is displayed on the monitor before the icon finished that single bounce. This seems to be the best hardware money I have spent in quite a while.
  5. I had someone ask me recently about this and I was wondering if anyone here had any experience doing this. Basically they want to install OS X Lion on an external volume and use it as the boot OS drive for two different Macs (one at home and one at work). In theory I would think this would work just fine, but the question is are there any unforeseen issues in doing this? The two I can think of are: Differences in hardware, specifically OS X firmware that might be specific to one model vs. the other Hardware drivers. Similar to item #1. If there are default drives needed for one Mac that were;t installed because the OS was tailored for the other Mac. Hope this makes sense.
