Recording suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to come up with a good setup for recording instrument (cello) recitals from the audience. I'm using a couple years old miniDV digital Sony Handycam but video isn't the problem... the problem is sound. The onboard mic is not good for this and the "zoom" mic I bought SIMA MZM-1 apparently sucks also. I can't get good sound. I have heard from the folks at the violin shop that getting a good recording of stringed instruments is difficult for some reason. The sound I get is "thin" and fairly screechy, any tips would be appriciated.

I have the feeling that the solution will be to place a microphone on stage but I don't know how to coordinate that with the video. I could probably clip a wireless mic to the cello and have the receiver plugged into the camera??

I guess this isn't strictly mac related - though I plan on doing any processing or editing on the mac and if it would help I can bring my MacbookPro to the recording.

Thanks

HB
