Sound Check: Does it really work?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I love using Macs and have been for years but I am curious about a specific function in iTunes called Sound Check. I have been experimenting with it and I wonder, does it really work? My songs still seem either too loud or too soft, and songs that sounded decent before the application of sound check now sound tinny or lacking the full sound they had previously. Please let me know what you all think. Also, are there any easy alternatives.

Thanks

Dave :-)

When this feature first appeared a few years ago, I gave it a shot and found the same issue you did. I think it is supposed to have all of the music play at the same volume, but I found that it just muted the louder songs, which seemed kinda pointless. As soon as I found this out, I disabled the feature, and I haven't touched it ever since...

i use Volume logic (http://www.octiv.com/index.asp?content=VolumeLogicPlugins2)  which makes a huge difference.  So much so that i don't notice how much it improves the listening experience until i burn a compilation CD and find the track volumes all over the place!

But VolumeLogic only works within iTunes, correct? I think the OP was talking about the effect that Sound Check has on the iPod. BTW, I've had the same results as others, so I don't use the feature.
