Will g4 install disc work to install Tiger on a g3?

Recommended Posts

I just have a quick question - I am attempting to upgrade a g3 that I recently purchased, and bought a Tiger disc on eBay to install on it. When I got it today, I realized that this was actually a g4 install and restore disc, although the fine print does say that it has OS X 10.4 on it. Will this disc work in my computer, or should I send it back? I haven't tried it yet, because I'm still waiting for the DVD drive that I ordered to arrive! I wasn't sure if there were any hardware-specific drivers on this disc, or if it would just install the OS? Or perhaps, do I need to find a disc that is specifically for a g3?

Unlikely. It's only the retail versions that will install on any mac. The restore discs are specific to the model of mac they ship with. You need the retail disc (I think I'm right in saying that no G3's shipped with Tiger pre-installed).

Actually, they sometimes work and sometimes not. One good example is the OS 9.2.2 CD that came with the Quicksilver G4s. Installs on any model, and is the only OS 9 install disc that takes you directly to 9.2.2. It's the same with OS X discs. Sometimes they work on everything, sometimes not.

2 days ago I installed OS X 10.3 on my Flower Power iMac G3 with the PowerBook Software Restore disc that came with my PowerBook G4.

I would give it a try, the installer package will let you know if it won't allow it.
