Working as a Mac Genius?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and gals! I just wanted to know a few things concerning working as a Mac genius. I am a recent psychology graduate with about a year of experience working with computer (they were PC though). I wanted to know what it was like for any of you who might have worked as a Mac Genius. What is it like? What is the pay like? How hard is it to get a job there? Are there any recommendations to books that might help? What qualities are they looking for? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I'm a computing graduate with 3 years mac experience and they didn't want me... And from my experience in the apple stores around here, it certainly isn't the ability to fix your computer they're looking for! The past three time I've been in there I've had to tell them that they're wrong when they're dishing out "advice" to other people.

But maybe they're just dumb in my local store...

I was in a similar situation as Graham with even more years Mac experience, try about 8. It seems that they want someone with expertise with a specific mac-type field. For example, there was a music guy and a movie guy and even someone who had almost no Mac experience but several years experience with page layout and publishing. It's not so much having the ability to fix Macs, which I know I have, but an ability to show that you bring something to them other than fixing. I agree with Graham about the need to correct them. There is one guy at my local Apple store who knows more about Macs than I do. I love hanging around the toys in the Apple stores, it does frustrate me that I know that I could do better. Good luck in applying for the job. You never know.

Sorry to hear that you had such bad luck. I'm might give it a shot, like you said you never know! If anyone has an experience with getting hired please let us know.

Yes, I'd like that. This would be better than my current job, though the commute would be kinda bad.

i had a similar problem. i knew i probably wouldnt live up to those "genius" standards.. by bringing something unique to the table. although i can fix computers and i have some experience (no formal training though). anyway, i decided to apply for the mac specialist position instead, and my "unique" thing was that i recently, about a year ago at the time, switched to mac. and through my experiences with computers in general and switching, i could persuade people to make the switch. they almost hired me too, but my schedule wasnt flexible enough. thats another thing they really want.

Thanks everyone for their reply! It seems like an interesting job, at least for a while. I am thinking of moving to San Francisco and I think I might try it for a while. I'm only 23 so if it doesn't work out I'll try something else, Thanks again and if anyone else has had an experience feel free to keep this post going, I think this is a topic many people are interested in.
