Show/Hide Hidden Files in Finder

Recommended Posts

Ever need to show hidden files in the Finder and then re-hide them, but didn't want to go through the terminal to do it? Here's a simple solution I came up with. Copy the below into an Automator "Run Shell Script" command:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

killall Finder

Insert a "Wait for User Action" command. Put in something like "Press "Continue" to restore the system. You can drag this window out of the way while you are working."

Then, insert another "Run Shell Script" command and put in the following:

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

killall Finder

That's it! Save out as an application, and every time you need to access hidden files, run it. It will unhide them and display a popup. Clicking "Continue" on the popup will restore the hidden files to their hidden state. Keep in mind that any finder windows WILL close at the beginning and end of the routine due to the "killall Finder" command, but this is necessary. Hope this helps some people out there!
