Time Capsule Dissection Photos

Recommended Posts

These photos of the Time Capsule disassembly reveal the “server grade” hard drive is a Hitachi DeskStar. Also of interest are the APconfig and APswap partitions.

I was thinking maybe it was a 10,000 rpm drive, but it clearly says 7200. Wow, all of my desktop computers have server grade hard drives!

"Server Grade" typically refers to a longer "mean time to failure" like 4 or 5 years. However, I've always considers Hitachi to be very poor quality drives. I've seen dozens of them die within 1 year...

This isn't really server grade is it?!

Fair enough for a home/consumer backup drive to be a standard desktop drive. The load shouldn't be too great on it.

The only question is why did they try and market it as something it quite obviously isn't!

Well, in Apple's defense, they use those drives in the Xserve and XRAID... They still aren't server grade, but at least Apple is consistent :P
