router performance ?

Recommended Posts

Here is the problem I try to solve, I hope that make sense to you.

I want to get a router that can support Qos or some kind of priority scheme. I guess most importantly, when I am transferring a large file within the same LAN, it won't affect any WAN traffic.

Today router, have 3 different way to deal with this situation.

1) software switching --- it will try to separate the traffic using software scheme

2) hardware switching --- same as software; but faster.

3) add CPU power --- mostly still using software scheme but with larger power to make it fast.

I have tested one router that did very well in that area; but it is not ready for sale yet (in beta I think). Does anybody have the any experience on that area ?

I can't help much here but I have been researching routers recently, and the DIR-655 from Dlink does claim to have a number of QoS features to prevent torrents from nuking Skype and so on. You can download the manual from their website for all the details.
