It's not HTML you're looking at, it's a mystic art known as .htaccess. If your web server is running Apache (it most likely is), head over to the site linked below, fill in the form, save the files where it tells you and bosh, password protected page.

Hey,

 

I tried the site and the dialog window opens in my site, yet the username and password don't work for some reason. Do you know what I need to do?

You've probably not put the correct path to the .htpasswd in the box. It needs to be the specific unix path - eg /home/yourusername/public_html, not http://blahblah.com/.htpasswd

 

There will probably be something in your host's help documentation as to what this is, because it's different for each host.
