When using Safari, I noticed that for some PDFs, for example this one

, Adobe's PDF viewer plug-in causes the entire browser to hang for almost exactly 60 seconds. I don't know what's in the PDF & plug-in that triggers this symptom, but it can be disabled. (But not from the browser's GUI.) To disable:

1. Open either Adobe Reader (free) or Adobe Acrobat (pay, still freezes browser)

2. Go to Preferences (cmd-,)

3. Go to Internet

4. Uncheck the checkbox that appears to the left of "Display PDF in browser using: [pulldown list for Adobe products]"

5. Press OK

6. Quit browser

Afterwards, PDFs should be displayed instantaneously in Safari using Preview.

Alternatively, you can delete the Adobe PDF plugin from /Library/Internet Plug-ins/
