Cracked.com

Recommended Posts

For some reason I can not connect to cracked.com. I've tried Safari, Chrome and Firefox with no luck, but I can get to it with my iPod so I know it's not my network/ISP. I'm wondering if maybe this problem might have something to do with my WOW problem I posted in the software section? Any ideas?

"Can't get to" is a little vague. Could mean a 404, or "safari can't connect to server", or perhaps your Mac is humor impaired.

Anything on the machine such as someone's Internet Security Suite or parental controls or filtering software? Using a proxy or VPN?

Double check the spelling of the URL on the bookmark.

What do you have configured for your DNS?

I'd start my investigation by opening Terminal on the offending Mac and typing "telnet www.cracked.com 80" to see how the address resolves in the DNS and whether the connection is established. Then I'd double-down with a curl command: "curl -v www.cracked.com". Then I'd stare at the output and say, "Hmmmm. Interesting." a couple of times while stroking my beard.

% telnet www.cracked.com 80

% curl -v www.cracked.com

Hmm. Interesting. (Beard stroking not shown.)

If those looked a lot like the examples above (but longer), I might even try a line trace with "sudo /usr/sbin/tcpdump -ae -i en0 -s 2000 -vv -X port 80" and then try to the browser again, which can produce incredible quantities of very cool-looking output to mull over.

% sudo /usr/sbin/tcpdump -ae -i en0 -s 2000 -vv -X port 80

Yeah I guess that was pretty vague. It's a "can not connect to server" problem.

Ok got it working! For some reason PeerGuardian was blocking the site.

Thanks for the help!!

Peer guardian is the cause of 90% of local DNS issues on the mac. Avoid avoid avoid.
