Removing a corrupted item from Finder "Places"

Recommended Posts

I attempted to copy a file to a network drive, and in the process it appears to be corrupted. I had placed a link in Places to the directory that was to contain the file, and when I click on that link it get the error message "The volume for "ZZZ" cannot be found. I can't remove the link or do anything with it. Is there a way to clean this out? <_<

You should be able to right-click (or control-click if using a single-button mouse) on the icon under Places in the Finder window sidebar and select "Remove from Sidebar" from the pop-up menu.

That's what I thought too, but it doesn't work. There's an icon there, but it doesn't respond to right click, only the error message about volume not found. Guess I can take it to the genius bar.

Simple, I know- but have you tried restarting your Mac? I had quite a few other computers continue to show up under "Network" in the Finder from my old network but I couldn't get them to leave until I restarted. This is obviously different than my Network, but worth a try if you haven't already.

Have you tried just dragging the item off the sidebar? Like you would for an item you wanted to remove from your dock?
