Exclude HTML files from Spotlight

Recommended Posts

I'm a freelance web designer and as such I have many HTML files littered all over my hard drive. Unfortunately all these HTML files clutter up my Spotlight search results. How can I exclude HTML files system-wide from Spotlight? Thanks!

I think (haven't tried HTML specifically - I prefer my HTML indexed so I can find things in my web pages) that you need to remove the line containing "public.html" from file /System/Library/Spotlight/RichText.mdimporter/Contents/Info.plist. You will probably need to sudo to root in the Terminal to access it.

You probably need to either eboot or enter command:...

mdimport -r  /System/Library/Spotlight/RichText.mdimporter/Contents/Info.plist

...for it to have effect. (I hope you don't have to delete the index and re-index the drive to purge the old stuff - my experience has been with adding file types I want indexed, not removing them.)[/code]
