im having second thoiughts about my decision to buy a macbook pro.

I cancelled my order because i wanted to add some stuff to it but because apple authorise payment at the time the order is placed i dont have any room on my credit card to re order until that authorisation is cancelled.

It would be my first mac, im currently running windows.

im wondering if my situation is a blessing in disguise, a lot of people that know much more about macs than i do (some well known and respected podcasters amongst others) are saying NOT to buy now and to wait for revision b in 6 months time...

my biggest concern is the fact that already PC makers like asus have just announced 2ghz dual core processors with 8x dual layer DVD drives which will be shipping shortly so im thinking that the macbook pro isnt such a good idea because there will be faster/better laptops out there at the same kind of time as the macbook pro is launched.

in 6 months time the new macbook pros could be shipping with faster processors, 8x dual layer DVD Drives and mac OSX 10.5..

im split 50/50 on this one.

what are your thoughts?

Dinger :)

fist off, the Macbooks are fast machines for whatever you are doing, second, By june the entire line of Macs will be intel ready and i you wanted an Intel Mini or intel PowerMac then they will be ready by june. It seems the whole shipping in february means Apple needs time to fix up the Macbook and they pushed the intel macs so it could be ready on Macworld,i would suggest waiting because by june to August the Macbook will be maye

Coming from a heavy Windows background I would say there is no other way to go. Just because Asus comes out with faster processors, doesn't make them better at all. I wouldn't recommend a PC to anyone but a truly, highly dedicated gamer.

That said; I wouldn't recommend a MacBook Pro to anyone right now either. Revision A is a bit hit an miss and there are a lot of apps that have to run through Rosetta which has mixed reports right now. I would wait for revision B at least. To be honest with you; I'd still buy a PowerBook G4 over a MacBook Pro right now. If you really want a laptop, I think it's the way to go unless you can wait for future announcements (I think the new iBook [MacBook?] will be more than adequate and cater for more users anyway).

The other option is an iMac; either a G5 or a Core Duo. Either of these are great machines and honestly, I don't see there being many issues with the iMac Core Duo except the current Rosetta issue which should be sorted by April.

I also am looking into buying this computer. I am a pro user that uses all the pro apps like Final Cut Studio, but i also like the portability of a laptop. I have a powerbook right now but its getting kind of old. I know that the pro apps wont be ready till march so i am going to wait till i see how they run on it before deciding to buy it. does anyone thingk this would be a good idea. I have been looking into buying a new computer but im not sure if this is the computer for me. thanks for any suggestions.

O yea. to answer your question i would say wait for a later computer if this is going to be your first mac.

It's fast, it's portable, it will do the job. Will it have issues? Yes. Is this a problem for you? If so you don't want it. Also; I assume you must be using FireWire 800 with external drives? You will need to buy an expansion card if you want to do this with a MacBook Pro. There are a lot of reasons not to, especially if this really is a work machine. If you need more of a workhorse then you don't want all the crap like the iSight eating power and you don't want all the crap like FrontRow eating CPU/RAM/Disk space.

Food for thought.

I agree, I am waiting for the iBook/mac book not only because I can't afford it now!

hmm, your good. It would be cool if Apple did go AMD too, it would help the gaming.

Also they go together. You know, they are both the underdog.

In macworld mag i think it showed "Why not AMD" and it showed the intel CEO holding the intel chip and a really old dude holding a AMD.

well maybe its an old guy to symbolize how bad the mobile chips of AMD are, but that is my only guess.

To the MacBook Pro.

There are realy only 2 questions you ahve to answer yourself.

Do you need to make Dual Layer DVDs? Yes? then wait

do you need Firewire 800? yes? then wait (but it may never come)

Do you need really long battery life and do not want to carry around an extra battery? you might want to wait

If the answer to allthese question is no.

And you want to get a Mac there is no reason to wait. But if one of your answers was yes you might want to wait
