Why I hate intel

Recommended Posts

Intel is perfect for Apple, they make a great mobility part, a decent desktop part, and have a huge supply chain. So if Apple ever says they aren't releasing something because they can't get enough CPUs they are lying!

If Intel can keep Dell in business Apple is small potatoes.

the Core Solo, and Core Duo chips are great, and AMD is faster, but not that much faster. Also Intel could sell Apple a whole platform, a chipset, a cpu, and southbridge. They are also quality components with tons of R&D and real world use.

the PowerPC was no competition to Intel, when you thought they were faster.... news flash, Steve Jobs was lying.

Your friend is not a genius.... if you are encoding video, the P4 is almost hte perfect CPU.

I love Apple as much as everybody else on this forum but you must realize that apple will never use up 1/10 of 1% of intel's processor market. Also I do agree that the P4 is good at encoding video. Also the fact that the iMac duo is faster is because of the fact that it is dual core, has faster ram, and has more VRAM. For the mobile part, yes intel has a tiny little advantage over AMD but intel has had a 2 year head start. Last I take offense at your insult.

In closing, LOCK THIS POST! I tried to do something nice to you all by explaining myself and everybody yells at me.

I don't see the insult. I saw the insult to your friend, but he probably doesn't consider himself a genius, so it might not bother him.

I don't really see the yelling either. I'm sorry. I know there are a whole slew of people disagreeing with you and not all of them have been horribly graceful about it, but I don't think there's much malice here.

I've learned a few things from this conversation. Thanks for getting it started.

I made a mistake putting it up. I did not think that everybody would agree with me but I expected people to understand my thoughts.

i understand that you think the PowerPC is better than Intel or Apple shoulda gone AMD but it comes down to perfermance per watt for Apple. P.S has anyone built a PC with a AMD athlon in it? whcih one would be better for a DYI intel or AMD.

I like AMD but you will find some contradicting oppionions here. Are you building one and for what?

Check this Site out. I would only suggest that you get a DVD burner w/ dual layer, an Athlon 3500+ processor, a nicer GPU, and a bigger HD. This project is a bit old so the price should remain the same even with the nicer parts. Also I have heard good things about the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. Check out Newegg.com for good deals.

I have heard that PPC chips that a considerable amount less input to make them do something, basically they do more with less calculations. I forget if it is 1/4th the amount or 1/4 less (meaning 3/4ths the amount), but it is significant. So a 3 GHz intel chip will be like a much slower PPC chip.

I have noticied that my old iMac, at 450 MHz, was faster than any Intel-based (only windows/Linux back then) computer I had used enough to actually judge the speed of... I have not seen any really fast computers (other than the 4x2.5 GHz PPC at the Apple store :D) , but the iMac seemed to be really fast for how slow it was... if you get that. What I am saying is that the difference is noticable.

Yes that was true, but we are not comparing here to a 2 year old Pentium chip but with the new Yonah chip, the Core Duo.

And one thing is for certain it is faster than any G4 out there, and just about beating the G5 in the old iMacs but just by a bit. So that is kind of normal after the G5 has been in the iMacs for over 1 year you would expect that a faster chip would come along and beat the old chip.

The PowerMacs I believe are still in raw performance still faster than the Intel chips but this will change this summer with the new Intel chips coming out I think around August.

So I really believe Apple did the right move at the right time.

The PowerPCs were always ahead of their time when they came out but then IBM never developed them much. You can probably blame that on Apple not buying enough chips from IBM and in return IBM did not investing too much into research.

And then the Game Console companies (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) came along and wanted to have chips from IBM and these companies are now and going to be a huge income to IBM with a 1000 times higher contribution to IBM, overturn and income, compared to Apple, and then IBM again started to invest a lot into the new PowerPC chips and adjusted the road map for them, the Game Consoles.

So then Apple started switching at the moment when the Intel chips

were starting to overtake the IBM chips (the old ones) in performance.

And it was not an option for Apple to stay with IBM because you would never have been able to put any of the new chips into a Powerbook, MacMini or iMac only into the PowerMacs.

Because those new chips will produce a lot of heat and not much performance per watt.

So then Apple switched to the best supplier on the market for performance per watt chips; Intel.

And this is the right move, because Laptop sales have and will overtake Desktop sales, also people want quieter machines, and all the cool products coming from Apple would not be able to be realised with IBM chips only with chips, which produce low heat, and high performance per Watt.

Thinner iMacs, thinner MacMinis, thinner PowerBooks (see MacBookPro)

OK rambled quite a bit, but I felt like writing down the bigger picture. :)

I love Apple as much as everybody else on this forum but you must realize that apple will never use up 1/10 of 1% of intel's processor market [....] For the mobile part, yes intel has a tiny little advantage over AMD but intel has had a 2 year head start. Last I take offense at your insult.

OK I don't realize the percentage part, please explain to me, because I see it this way (With approx. numbers):

Intel and AMD at the moment I believe share the PC market at 50% each, more or less.

Now Apple has somewhere between 3%-5%, this is true, the 50% of Intel I am not quite susre off, but it can only be more than less.

So this means assuming Intel assuming Intel has 50% that about 6% - 10% of all Chips Intel seels in the computer bussuiness are for Apple not 0.1% has you said, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Also you say Intel had a 2 year head start so? That only tells me that Intel was a lot smarter 2 years before AMD, ok I give you AMD does as always a great job and catching up :)

ok, i found my mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16811129146

and my AMD choice of chip http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819104249

and i think i hope this is the right mother board in speaking of chip compatibility

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813186068

and all i need is probably a super drive and and Hard drive.

That chip is a little weak. Next what video card are you useing? Also you might want to try a socket 939 chip/motherbord. Aside from that. Good luck, and remember HAVE FUN!

P.S. Mobo=motherbord,

oh, though it meant case. i am a PC noob so wada you expect? but what chip would recoomend along that price range, under 100 dollars? also i want to use a micro ATX motherboard.

A low end AMD 64. Also there are many micro ATX MOBOs that have socket 939 on them. Good luck.
