iMac 2.0Ghz Core Duo - A Review

Recommended Posts

I thought I would share some inital impressions of my new 20" Intel Mac 2.0Ghz Core Duo with you, so you can decide if this machine is right for you. I picked it up at the local Apple store so I knew I was getting the base configuration (512MB RAM)- which is OK because it is available now and installing extra RAM on the iMac is easy and cheaper than from Apple. I decided on the 20" because I do alot of web browsing and you can easily fit two Safari browsers side to side - unlike the 17". Now I must tell you, this thing is lighting fast, and there is no latency using any of the Intel native apps. You must try it to believe it. I didn't take any qualitative boot times but it is noticiably faster than my 17" iMac G5. This machine runs so quiet that I can hear the refrigerator in the next room before I take notice of this machine. It comes installed with iLife '06 and required no software updates out of the box (which is nice for a change). As you know this machine comes with Front Row, which I don't really see what the big deal about is, and the built in iSight camera which is cool. I can't tell you how awesome this new iMac is. The price point on it is amazing, and once all the Pro Apps go Universal there will be no reason not to switch. If you are on the fence right now about the iMac, and can't wait til March to get a Macbook Pro, lighten up your wallet and go get one of these bad boys!

I was a bit underwelmed.

Dude... it's faster than a G5 for the same price. In a few months, most software will be universal binaries anyways. Doesn't get better than that.

It was just as fast as my G5. How fast does yours boot up anyway?

I was a bit underwelmed.

Fanboyism run amok.

What do you mean?

I'm just referring to the general PC vs. Mac, AMD vs. Intel, Power PC vs. x86, Linux vs. Windows vs. OS X, Firewire vs. USB, Nvidia vs. ATI, Apple vs Dell, Creative vs. Apple, and LCD vs. CRT nonsense. People are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too attached to things and invest emotionally into them (Mac geeks included!). My philosophy is if it runs OS X, is fast, and looks good...then I don't care what's inside. This Intel vs. PPC debate is getting old as quickly as the AMD vs. Intel battle.

It's not just you, I'm just pointing it out.

If it wasn't faster, Apple wouldn't have moved to it... case closed. cfsporn, you are just angry your G5 is now out of date.

No I tried it and compaired it. And found that it was just as fast as my G5.

What kind of G5 do you have? Because the intel iMacs are way faster than just about anything that Apple offers. I think that everyone understands that you think intel sucks, so why don't you stop filling these threads with such messages and unconfirmed information.

That's probably just your psychlogy, you want Intel to be slower. ;)

Well now that this topic has been brought up by a spammer, I would just like to announce that I am no longer an intel hater.
