Calling Forum Regulars

Recommended Posts

There has been a lot of talk about two main topics lately:

1. Slow forums

2. Use of images in signatures

Anyone else see a corellation? It's obvious that images in signatures slow the page load times; but they also make posts difficult to follow among other things. Where do they get you though? Why have them? You already have a graphic next to your name, you don't need a graphic under it aswell. We all know who you are and we don't need adverts either.

I am not getting at anyone at all, but I am calling for all MacCast forum regulars to remove their banner ads and other images from their signatures. It's a polite request and one made in the best interest of the forum and it's regular members.

Anyone want to say anything? ;)

Disclaimer: Firstly I want to make it clear that this was posted before I became a moderator and thus my position has no relevance to this topic at all. This is me trying to correlate the opinion of the forum regulars in a topic that effects you all and has been brought up of late. This has nothing to do with the administration team or any "rules" we are thinking of imposing (as we are not, at all) and I am posting here as a regular member (as I usually do anyway). Whatever is discussed here is just that, discussion; with the hope that the regular members (heavy users) will come to some kind of a conclusion themselves on what they would like to see in each other and thus try not to annoy/offend anyone. No rules will be imposed but I hope you can all help make this forum a better place to be.

that on any forum having text only sigs is always a good idea. When I used to be in the governing body of a gaming clan, it was an issue that sadly, was never resolved. Eliminating the graphics will make the forums run much smoother for all.

I completely agree, Matt.

Often the large signatures make a thread difficult to read.

It's interesting to see what types of hardware people own, which is often listed in a signature; but again I agree: Let's keep those signatures to a minimum.

Question: In what thread(s) have people been discussing the use of images as signatures. I guess I haven't been paying attention.

:)

There have been a few. Especially in threads including other images (the screenshot thread) and recently Mitch and Kerry have also mentioned it. It hasn't been popular with some of us (perhaps I'm not the only ex-pro forum admin?) since the beginning.

I personally do not care for the images in signatures on forums. It detracts from the forum and sometimes makes threads hard to read.

There is a setting in the phpbb software that will disallow images in signatures, one of my motorcycle forums has it set this way and it helps.

I woudn't be opposed to this.

I don't want you to think this was some kind of Witch Hunt, no matter what X has said. It wasn't aimed at you, but rather a classification of feelings from forum regulars about image based signatures in general.

Agreed. X had the photo of the big guy eating the burger the other day. :)

I agree, I find it very hard to read when there is a huge picture clogging up the page.

Hey,

I noticed a few graphics showing up in signatures again lately, so I thought I'd bump this thread, and bring to everyone's attention that we essentially agreed as a community not to use graphics in signatures.

This is a particular problem for me because I'm often on dial-up now, and the signatures really slow the loading of the forums.

Thanks.

Best Regards,

Just wanted to ad my vote for no images.

I have always liked the systems summary in peoples posts, it helps knowing this when trying to trouble shoot problems.

Firefox sucks, but other than that, it's okay.

I personally find animated avatars really annoying, but that's a subject for a different thread really. I would suggest that it's okay for now since it's only 8Kb in size, but you might want to start another thread about weather the community finds it acceptable.

It is better than internet explorer.
