To buy a new G5 Powermac or not

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to decide whether to purchase a new G5 Dual 2.0 GHz Powermac for $2000 or to purchase a used model for considerably less, add about $300-400 in upgrades along with no Applecare and wait for the Intel Powermacs (or whatever they call them by then, Mac Pro?). Any comments and insight would be very helpfull.

Thanks!

That's a tough one to answer. Do you already have a Mac? Do you need more power now? If you do thengo ahead and order a system with Applecare (it will be worth more when you come to sell it if that happens) and if not then I suggest you wait it out, see what happens and if all else fails buy the dual PPC for considerably less then.

Well right now I have a 1.42GHz Mac Mini accompanied by a 20" ACD along with a 1.67GHz 15" Powerbook. I am a graphic design student and would rather do all of my work on a desktop setup. The Mini is a great machine for what it is, but wayyy too much of the spinning beach ball when doing any designing in Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.

Applecare is a must for everything I buy, especially large purchases like this.

Here's a breakdown of my options...

NEW G5 Powermac

Dual 2.0 GHz

160 GB Hard drive

512 MB RAM

3 years of Applecare

cost: $1999 (with student discount plus Applecare)

Plus I'll add more RAM in the next few months ($210)

--------------------------------------------------------

USED G5 Powermac

Single 1.6 GHz

80 GB Hard drive

512 MB RAM

no warranty / no Applecare

cost: $700

with this set-up I'd have to add more RAM ($210) and a larger hard drive ($150)

Something to consider: The front side bus of the 1.6 is slooooowww...if you're going to keep it for a long time, go for the Dual 2.0..

If you can stand it, keep the mini for a bit and you'll see Adobe apps going Universal. Then jump on the new MacPros or whatever they'll be called.

Another option would be the new Core Duo iMac...some are saying the rendering is as fast as a 2.0 Dual G5 (per a Macrumors thread) and you can use your ACD and have a ton of screen real estate. I'm not sure if Illustrator works or not, I'd have to check on that one. Even in Rosetta, with a good amount of ram the new iMacs fly. Your choice of course, but some people are staunchly opposed to the whole Intel thing. Try em out at the Apple Store and see what you think. I sat and played with the 17 inch iMac and it was pretty fast, even the apps running under Rosetta. Had the stock 512mb of ram, but bumping it up would be a must.
