Hard Drive Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have a PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz, with a 160GB Hard Drive. I was wondering if I can either upgrade the HD to a larger size or add a second drive.

Ideally Id like to fit a second hard drive myself, using a drive off the net rather than going to an apple store. Is that at all possible? If so is there a particular type of HD I would need to get?

Thanks

Yes you can put another HD in your PowerMac. You would need a SATA 3.5 inch HD.

@big_rich1 Yes, as said above any internal 3.5" SATA hard drive will do. To lay it out though:

The higher the RPM the better in terms of speed (usually 4800, 5200 [as Apple usually use], 7200 [as PCs usually use] or 10,000 [WD Raptor is highly recommended])

Capacity is obviously a question. I don't know about the US (even cheaper than the UK, but as an outline) but I would say 2Gb per £ on average.

Manufacturer; this is very important. Everyone has their favorites and everyone will argue blue about it, but with about a decade of experience with hard drives of various shapes, sizes and etc. I would highly recommend Western Digital above all others. Maxtor are also very good although I am not keen on Apples choice of Seagate or Hitachi. I haven't had issues with these in my Mac, but my experience would push me away from them.

Check out sites such as www.ebuyer.com for good reviews of most major hard drives and other components. The UK based guys generally know what they are talking about so it's a good quick reference.

@cfsporn Was the avatar comment necessary? Could it not have been tagged onto another post when it was next appropriate (like this one is)?
