'image'

what is the 'image' of the computer?

 

my school computers have been 're-imaged' and i am wondering what that is.

It is a bit for bit copy of a hard disk, saved as a file. Usually created by a program like Symantec Ghost. It saves time reinstalling an OS because there is no configuration needed. An image is just a point in time copy of a system.

It also includes formatted disk space and unformatted disk space as well as other such information which is data-less; something unusable to a computer except to verify disks as being original and untouched. Using images can be a great way to circumnavigate certain systems and restrictions but is mainly used for reasons of backup and restore easily and effectively as described above.
