Pentium D

OS and Apple Apps as well as their affiliation with Adobe. Remember that the whole thing balances on Apples ability to make things work seemlessly; not on the hardware that they don't actually build themselves. The design of every Mac, of OSX for 5 years has been geared up for this so it's not an overnight bastardisation.

In addition you have to look at the roadmaps and speed increases (real term). As Steve said in 2004 Keynote;

And the 2005 Keynote;

"We have some amazing products we want to build for you, and we don't know how to build them with the future PowerPC roadmap."

I still think he got his priorities wrong.

While the intel chips may have clock speeds over 3gHz, theyre not that efficient. However, in the mobile chip department, the intel chips are probably the best in terms of power consumption and efficiency. I think this is why Apple is making the switch, and it also opens the possibility for them to use the AMD chips in the future. I dont know the Intel roadmap, but I'm sure interesting things are coming. My problem is that the Mac is known for being the choice for multimedia production (graphic, video, audio, etc.), but I fear that moving to x86 may hurt that. But I could be wrong...That "multimedia edge" may be in the os code and not all in the hardware...

I hope that they use the AMDs.

I read this week that someone got Intel OSX to work on an AMD system. I just can't remember where I read it, maybe on digg.com.

You forget that as far as Apple is concerned AMD is IBM... they share resources and lab space.

So that is why hey are almost always better than intel...

AMD does better for gaming, but Intel's processors do fare better in tasks like video encoding, rendering, etc. Of course, the AMD ones are running at much lower clock speeds.

Benchmarks:

http://www23.tomshardware.com/index.html

The Pentium 4 EE 3.72 GHz performed best, completing the encoding in 1:40. The AMD FX-55 was the fastest AMD chip, coming in at 1:51.

The AMD FX-55 costs $811 from NewEgg.com

The Intel chip that wasn't the fastest one, but still beat the FX-55, costs $281.

That's one second of performace faster, for $530 less!

Of course, the FX-55 is a killer gaming chip, and is 64 bit. In another benchmark (Lame MP3 enconding), the FX-55 tops the charts. But I have a feeling Intel is going to start shaking things up soon.

Intel is scrapping the Pentium4 architecture and using the Pentium M as the basis for the new chips. Apple has a good reason for choosing Intel, and I'm simply waiting until I find out why.

Well, thats my $.02.

Im addicted to mac, and extremely opposed to almost everything, but i dont think these generalized comments help anyone. Maybe you could be a little more specific as to why you think they suck. Possibly educating the rest of us.

I know they are used for gamng. I know that people don't just play games and when their box turns ons Counter Strike is in the starup list. As in a previous comment tha AMD is 500 $ more expensive but a tad slower. I know for me i would prefer intel (can't upgrade macs till 08-09, woe is me....) and I would take in prices too. I have used both and AMD seemed more sluggish.

Nope. I am not going to kill you. It is a free country.

Oh great now I am going to get a "You have seen the light" e-mail from so many people. Well I still think the AMDs are better, but we are all entitled to our own pponion

I will sum it up with this...

This thread is starting to look like a scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey, with all those boxes seemingly disappearing into the distance. Just needs Ligeti's Atmospheres soundtrack music.

Anyone doesn't understand watch 2001, a true geek film.
