I am an idiot - Trash help needed

Recommended Posts

I needed more space on my mini so I deleted some stuff I didn't use or need, one was a program called Panorama maker.....but now it's in the trash it will not delete. When I try to move it back into applications it just copies itself there...

Now when I delete my trash I still have this program in it...

How do I delete it for good?

Many thanks in advance.

Also - anyone else have a meltdown this week? early in the week I had left my mini on and when I came to use it the whole system had reset with most of my itunes gone and safari reset.....thank god for back ups! I wondered was there an update or something?

Nope that hasn't happened to me

When you empty your trash hold the option key down.

That should do it

There is also a way to do it from the terminal but i don't know what the command line is

Maybe someone else does.

usually, when something won't let itself be deleted, this something is still in use. Try logging off, logging on and empty the trash again.

tiny bit of unix knowledge is requred here.

follow these instructions and its a doddle to remove anything from the trash.

1. Click the Trash Can in the dock

This will open up the trash can within a finder window

2. Open up Terminal (Applications > Utilities)

3. Type the following into the terminal command window (where _ is this should be a space) enter the following: sudo_rm_ -rf_ DO NOT PRESS ENTER

4. Drag the offending file/folder from the trash window we opened in step 2 into the terminal window.

It should now look something like this 'sudo rm -rf /users/yourname/.trash/ the file you are deleting

5. Press return

I know it seems long winded but once you have done it 2,3,4 times its easy.

good luck

Finder --> Secure Empty Trash

Normally I find this deals with "stubborn" items in Trash.

You may want to reduce the size of your avatar?

You may have this resolved by now. It may that your file was LOCKED. Try selecting the stubborn file by clicking once and while holding the APPLE key press the letter 'I' to get info on the file and in the "General:" section of the info window, unlock the file.
