While I was hoping for a better graphics solution, I guess the MBP wouldn't be a Pro if it weren't different in some way. I like what they're offering.....good price point, too.

Anyone know if there is much gaming potential w/ a GMA950 built-in graphics chip on the Windows side? I don't think.....integrated graphics w/ so little memory (only 64mb) tend to be slower than molasses, IIRC.

Wow! this is great.

I am impressed with the specs for price.

I wonder what the gloss screen is like??

I love the black! Wonder if its the same material they used to used for the Pismo Powerbooks?

You won't have to. PPC machines will still be fine & supported for another 3-4 years yet.

I still use my Pismo G3-500 Powerbook which is now 6 years old!

I'm a little nervous about the glossy screen (which they are also offering as an option on the MBPs). The ones I've seen on PCs produce a lot of glare and finger prints. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the Apple ones do...

We only order Ibooks for laptops we don't have any old machines.

So when they discontinue selling Ibooks we are screwed.

I just ordered 10 more to be safe! LOL

So yesterday I got a letter from the IRS saying that I had made a mistake and overpaid my taxes. So, if I don't mind, their proposed solution is to give me back a lot of money.

I just ordered me up a MacBook. I selected the basic model w/1.83GHz Core Duo and I upped the hard drive to 120GB. Then I ordered 2GB of RAM from NewEgg.

Right now Apple is estimating a shipping date of 5/23.

The MacBooks look all good except for the GPU.

With the consumer and professional expectations and needs in portable computing coming so close together over the past few years it's really becoming apparent that Apple have taken this on board and are offering very similar machines for very different tasks.

I think this new MacBook line is awesome, it really meets all the needs I have as both a consumer and professional. I don't think the GPU is a big deal at all for the reason that consumers only really need any more of a GPU than the one offered (which is actually quite good, Intel are among the best of the "onboard" market) and also that portable computers are not good gaming platforms. I still think Apple will compete in the gaming market (especially with the release of BootCamp), but portables are going to be a no-no.

My only gripes are the black coloring and the optical drives. I am all for choice, don't get me wrong but I do like that Macs stand out from other portables, perhaps the black MacBook will blur this line; I don't like that idea. Perhaps in the real world it will still stand out enough, but I would want a white one. As for the opticals; I can't believe no one has mentioned the lack of choice. Seeing as the iBooks and PowerBooks had a choice to knock off $70 for a DVD-RW that I for one wouldn't use, I can't believe I am forced to buy a bottom end model to rid myself of the SuperDrive in favor of a Combi. I think it's great to offer a SuperDrive as standard (for the best part in this case at least) but I'd like to be able to get a 2.0Ghz model and save the $70 to use against AppleCare for example.

I would also miss FW800, but I think I have bugged that one to death.

i wonder about battery life tough.

This should answer your question. Of course real world testing will tell all but I trust them on this because of Intel advances and their previous record with reliable battery stats.

Work Longer Unplugged

MacBook offers up to 6 hours of battery life. (2.5 hours of DVD playback, 3.5 hours with wireless turned on.) Here’s how to squeeze out every last second of battery power when you need it.

Turn off AirPort and Bluetooth if you’re not using them

Disconnect peripherals not in use

Quit applications not in use

Eject CDs and DVDs not in use

Choose Energy Saver in System Preferences, click the Show Details button, and:

Select “Better Battery Life”

Set MacBook to sleep after five minutes (or less) of inactivity

Put the display to sleep after five minutes (or less) of inactivity

Check the box next to “Put the hard disk to sleep when possible”

Agreed but then I think to myself Apple needs some differnce between the MBP and the MB.

looks like I'll be getting a MBP I'll just have to wait alittle longer for them to fix some/all of the problems

Apple will almost certianly exchange if it meets the following criteria:

You must still be within the return period (30 days I believe)

You must have purchased the computer from that store

The Product must still be in resalable condition (viz. perfect)

I'm sorry... but since day 1 of the talk about a black model, I haven't understood all the hoopla. What's the big deal? Some people are acting like they've never heard of a black laptop and it's some new revelation. I think the black model looks very ordinary... like dozens of other portables on the market by PC-makers. The white is SO much nicer looking and I don't understand why most do not prefer it over the black. Perhaps someone could explain if I've missed something...
