NEW FORUM SOFTWARE

38 posts in this topic

Is this software free, or do you have to pay for it? Also, I've heard that there are free versions of it or something....

It is commercial software. Invision used to release the software as both free and commercial software, but after version 2.0 was released, it went all commercial.

Am I the only one who hates the new forum look?

no, not really. i think it's kinda bland. can adam, mitch, matt, or rob add a new skin or make one like the folks at AeroXperience? did? (fyi, they're a windows developing community) we could have a little aqua-theme :)

As you could probably imagine, Adam has other projects he is working on to better the podcast and the website. The forums are meant to be a place for discussion, help, etc. Eye candy shouldn't really matter. The skin isn't a beauty, but it works, and it isn't horribly ugly. Remember, the switch in software occurred just a few weeks ago. The change in part was made to make the forums a more enjoyable place for users (it made many tasks that users have to somewhat frequently over time much easier, and it is helping us fight users with more malicious intentions.) That being said, the forum can still evolve, and still needs to evolve, so I am not saying that new skins won't happen, but at this point it isn't on the to-do list for a number of reasons. But who knows what will come down the pipeline in the future :)

I hate the new look. And while I know Adam is busy, and I know that this forum is supposed to be function over form, I have stopped coming here as often as I used to simply because of the look. I mean come on, we are a bunch of Mac Heads! If we can not cook up something that looks nice, than who can?

That is my 2 cents.

It is one of the standard Invision Boards looks, a bit "maccasted". I like it. It is functional. Yet, if I may add my 2 cents: take a look here: simple skin, and sooooo familiar: http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/ B)

cfsporn...

Do you quit going to a class because you do not like the teacher's look? Geez... get over the look. Who cares if it is a flashy look with lots of graphics and lots of flash. Like you said, function over form is better than a nice look that takes half a day to download. Many of the people on here are not on a high-speed connection or have to use satellite connections (like me) which have a ping time of almost 1 second.

I would much rather have the simple look of the current forums with all the good information that we get than a flashy forum where nobody visits.

Aqua-Soft is powered by vBulletin, not Invision, but you probably already knew that. :)

Well...the forum does have a generic out the box Invision look, even to the extent of having the IPB buttons. If you do a Google search for Invision Board Forums's you'll find most of them have the same look.

Kerry, I agree that "function over form is better" and also having the good content of the Maccast Forum is even better.

However, I would like to see a more distinctive look to the Forum. I use a wireless internet provider that claims to provide me with a 512kbps connection speed (hardly broadband), but often delivers what seems to be 28kbps speeds at peak times. Even so, I wouldn't expect that adding some distinctive images to the site would slow things down, especially when you consider browser caching.

The Mac community has a tradition of having a strength in the media and design field, so couldn't we just ask some of those people to contribute designs for a re-worked forum?

I'm aware that no one gets paid on the board for doing the work they do, but why not ask the member's to contribute their design's?

I'll say this again. Give it time. The forums are still new. No it isn't flashy. No it isn't beautiful, but we do have a great group of members who come here for content, not look. It isn't that we aren't capable of creating a new skin, or installing an existing skin. Remember that if Adam wanted a new skin, he would've put one up. If and when Adam is interested in a member contributed design, I am sure that he will ask for it. Will that be tonight, tomorrow, a month from now? Who knows. But please, take my word for it...Adam is aware that members don't think this is the most beautiful look, and aware that members are asking for a change. Just give it time, and see what happens. Until then, just enjoy the content and the community feeling of the forums. Changes/Upgrades could happen at anytime...Or they could not. Just take what we have, and enjoy it :)

I just setup a new forum on one of the sites I've been working on. Changing a skin is really easy, but change doesn't make it better. I've looked at tons of forum designs trying to decide how I wanted to do mine. There are a lot of intense designs out there. People use moving graphics, large pictures and backgrounds, strange colors, etc. In my opinion the flashier sites look a little over the top, are often harder to read, and don't flow as well.

So, I think yeah they could change this skin, but if it becomes something really "cool looking", I think we will loose some of how well these forums work. If it is a simple change, I wonder if it is really worth Adam's time. I for one am happy with the current setup.

Amen! :)

Now... why did you have to go and change your forum display name?

Originally I didn't like the new software because it went really, really slow for me. Now, it goes at a decent speed, but still way slower than the last. Also, just now it crashed on me, which I thought was odd since Safari normally only crashs on massive pages from myspace.

I also don't like how it looks, but I understand that that is a low priority and I'm willing to wait for a long time so that doesn't really matter to me.

Just thought I should mention the loss of speed.
