Leopard + RAM

6 posts in this topic

Leopard is pretty cool, but new features like Spaces, new Spotlight, new Dashboard, and Time Machine are also going to run in the background and eat RAM (yes, delicious RAM!!!) Noticing how my MacBook Pro (2.0ghz 256VRAM) likes to page out heck a lot while running multiple apps at once with 1GB RAM, I sometimes wonder if I was using a 3 year old PowerBook.

Take this into consideration:

Dashboard Widgets (10 to 20MB EACH)

Run about 5 widgets, that's prolly 75MB of RAM.

Spotlight (prolly 10-20MB)

Time Machine (prolly 40MB) since its copying files on the fly

Spaces (prolly 30-40MB)

Finder (25MB)

System Events

loginwindow (a collection of apps ~35MB)

iTunes Helper

Apple Spell

configd [what the heck is that]

...and the rest of your background services.

So my thoughts are...

...Bye bye RAM!!!

and

...Buy buy RAM!!!

For mm, iM, mb, and mbp ram, its ~$50 for 512MB stick and ~$75 for 1GB stick

I was thinking the same myself. There must be 6 to 8 months before release so i think i may upgrade my ram in this time or its going to be an expensive day come the release of leopard.

1gb will run Leopard it all depends on what these new CORE apps take, i would think it would be more dependent on GPU rather than RAM, Tiger can get by on 256mb i can see leopard needing 512mb as a minimum

however, that's quite unlikely. apple has only started making 1gb standard on the really "pro" models such as the 2.5grand mbp, 17" mbp, and all mp's.

at least ram is cheap for us non-mac pro owners :D sorry the new mp people have to buy the fb-dimms with the HUGE heatsinks...but on anandtech i saw 16gb's for less than 3 grand w/o the crazy heatsink
