Web Hosting

Recommended Posts

Ive been put in charge of creating a website for a school's PTO in my area. That doesnt have to do with the problem. The question is, is it a better idea for me to create a web server at the school for it to be hosted it on and get a domain name for it, or create the site then upload the created site up onto the site that would host it for me, Ill still get a doman name. If you would say this last option what site would be better to use?

Thanks for any help.

I would say go with a webhost, since they will take care of the administration of the server, and will be able to provide support if you need it. I work for A Small Orange, so I am going to suggest you check us out. http://asmallorange.com/services/

You could probably start out with the 30 dollars a year plan, and if you outgrow that, you can always upgrade.

DEFINITLY go with a hosting provider. I guaruntee there is much more than you would think to setting up your own server. I have never used asmallorange but I'm sure they would probably work well. I have always had good luck with http://www.godaddy.com. $4.00 a month is a small price to pay to not have to deal with the hassle of hosting yourself.

I used to host sites before I realized it was easier to outsource. :D (I had 8 different government sites that I hosted from one of my servers). Having someone host it for you means you can let them deal with any issues. Site down on a Saturday morning? Call them instead of having to go into work to fix it yourself.

If you wanted to you could build an intranet site that only the school in question can access. I had one where I worked before, it was great. Everything people needed was on it, staff directory, etc. I spent a LOT of time on it only to have the person that took my job over kill it when I left since "it took too much time". :P

I was recomended by some to go to this site http://www.1and1.com. On the home page there was a different is servers i think. They had Linix hosting and Microsoft hosting. I know this is a mac forum but i was wondering if there really is a difference? If there is what one would you go with?

Linux is ten times more reliable than Windows, that's all it is.

DO NOT GO TO 1 and 1. What a waste of your time and money. Go with a host that has Linux hosting with cPanel, and that isn't called 1 and 1...Whoever suggested 1and1 to you is quite mistaken.
